Issues and recommendations regarding implementation of high school graduation tests by William A Mehrens( Book )

3 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As the first paper in a series of policy papers on high-stakes student assessment programs, this paper examined high school graduation tests. High stakes refers to the use of test results to make important decisions about the test taker. Whether to use a high school graduation test is an essential policy question that will be addressed in a forthcoming paper; how to develop a sound graduation test is the focus of this paper, and most of the material is drawn from the experiences of the seven states participating in the North Central Educational Research Laboratory (ncrel). Brief descriptions of graduation requirements and tests are given. An expert panel employed by the ncrel to help Michigan develop its high school graduation test offers recommendations in the broad categories of (1) content specification, (2) psychometric issues, (3) educational issues, (4) legal issues, (5) policy and administrative issues, and (6) human and financial resources. Helping Teachers Use Information: The Data Box Approach by Donna S Wanous( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Describing the findings and insights gained from a two-year research and development project entitled "Integrating Assessment with Instruction," this document focuses on the current measurement needs of teachers and the instructional processes for meeting those needs. The article is divided into four segments: (1) a description of the literature in the field of educational measurement that guided the development of the project; (2) a description of the project, its goals and components; (3) a discussion of the results from the field trials; and (4) a set of reflections about recommendations for the professional development of teachers in the content area of educational measurement. The "Data Box" is introduced and described as an instructional package having teachers investigate the use of assessment data in a variety of instructional decision-making situations. There are six components: a taxonomy, a set of vigrettes, a document file, a memo pad, an interpretive manual, and an applications manual. Major measurement concepts teachers need to know, and a thorough evaluation plan, are given. (Author/CE)

Identification and Programming for the Gifted: Some Limitations of Guilford's Structure of Intellect Model. Draft by Harvey F Clarizio( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The paper critically analyzes the research and promotional literature on J. Guilford's Structure of Intellect (soi) model as it relates to the cognitive functioning of gifted students and evaluates the implications of this analysis for the counselor's role in the identification and programming of gifted students. The review is written from developmental and measurement bases and covers materials published by the soi Institute, workshop materials from districts using soi materials, and professional research literature. It is concluded that the soi promotional literature promises far more than it has delivered and that severe psychometric limitations seriously limit the soi model's usefulness. Limitations center on the lack of reliable assignment of test items to soi categories, unreliable difference scores, and the lack of adequate validity evidence for differential treatment effects.
