"Anyone with an interest in the problems of highly creative children will find this volume useful in guiding a wide range of creative talent at all age and educational levels. In preparing this material, I have drawn most heavily upon my own research and that of my colleagues concerning the creative thinking of children, adolescents, and adults. Although my emphasis is upon the problems of highly creative children, I believe you will find these materials useful in guiding a wide range of creative talent at all age and educational levels. I have also attempted to give these research findings and observations meaning from my experience as a teacher, counselor, and principal in a high school and as a college teacher and counselor, roles in which I have met many highly creative individuals. I have also drawn upon my research concerning behavior under emergency and extreme conditions, especially situations involving coercion"--Preface. A subtle revolution in the goals and methods of education, which has been occurring in the United States since the early 1960s, emphasizes both creative problem solving and creative expression. This booklet discusses this creativity and explores the evidences of change in educational objectives, teaching methods, curriculum and instructional materials, procedures for identifying creative talent, and the assessment of creative achievement. The booklet also deals with creativity at different educational levels, measuring creative thinking abilities, the pattern of development of creative abilities, creative ways of learning, what teachers can do, planning learning experiences for creativity, the teachers' own creativity, and goals in guiding creativity. A list of selected references is included. (Jm)

Discovery and nurturance of giftedness in the culturally different by E. Paul Torrance( Book )

6 editions published in 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Discussed in the monograph are methods for identifying and developing programs for culturally different gifted students. In an overview section, the important issues and trends associated with the discovery and nurturance of giftedness among the culturally different are considered; and screening methods which involve modified traditional procedures, instruments that seem to lack cultural bias, and culture specific procedures are reviewed. A nonpsychometric approach is offered for identifying strengths and using strengths to motivate learning, select learning experiences, and develop career plans in 18 areas (which include ability to express feelings and emotions; ability to improvise with commonplace materials and objects; and articulateness in role playing, sociodrama, and story telling). A final section focuses on alternative programs, approaches, and additional general guidelines for discovering and nurturing giftedness. Appended are a table summarizing studies of racial and socioeconomic bias of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, a sample checklist for observing signs of giftedness among the culturally different, and an annotated list of biographies and autobiographies of successful culturally different people for young readers. The manifesto : a guide to developing a creative career by E. Paul Torrance( Book )

11 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than 40 years ago, E. Paul Torrance undertook to study creativity in students and study whether it would predict their creative achievements as adults. He and his colleagues wanted to determine what other factors influence, predict, encourage or sustain their creativity over time. There has never been a longitudinal study of creativity of this magnitude. The findings described here will be useful to, and have implications for, parents, teachers, counselors, instructors, and educational administrators
