Benedetto(
Book
)
14 editions published between 1972 and 2016 in Italian and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Beneficio di Cristo, first published in Italy in 1543, was one of the most popular books of spiritual devotion of the 16th century. After this work was suppressed by the Inquisition, however, it was long thought to be lost, and few copies of the original publication survive. This volume includes the text of the 1543 edition of the Beneficio along with several later translations into French, English, or Croatian, with extensive critical notes on each version of the text. It also includes the Compendio d'errori written by Ambrogio Catarino Politi in 1544, a criticism of the Beneficio as heretical that led to its suppression by the Inquisition. Other documents are also included, mostly those that provide evidence for the question of the authorship of the Beneficio
