Images of organization by Gareth Morgan( Book )

217 editions published between 1986 and 2018 in 18 languages and held by 3,679 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Effective managers are skilled in the art of 'reading' the situations that they must organize or manage. Professor Morgan's book is designed to develop the art of reading and understanding organizations. Firstly, he shows how many of our conventional ideas about organizations and management build upon a small number of images, especially mechanical or biological ones. Secondly, by exploring these and alternative images, he shows how to develop new ways of thinking about organizations. Thirdly, he demonstrates how this method of analysis can be used for the management and design of organizations. And fourthly, he explores the theoretical implications raised by this kind of analysis. Morgan works from the premise that our theories and explanations of organizational life are based on metaphors that lead us to see and understand organizations in distinctive, yet partial ways. He demonstrates how the use of different methaphors provides new ways to manage and design organizations. Overall, this work stands as a treatise on metaphorical thinking that contributes to both the theory and practice of organizational analysis
Imaginization : the art of creative management by Gareth Morgan( Book )

48 editions published between 1993 and 2000 in 5 languages and held by 1,332 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Imaginization: An invitation to a new way of thinking about organization and management." "Imaginization is a way of thinking. It's a way of organizing. It's a key managerial skill. It provides a way of helping people understand and develop their creative potential. It offers a means of finding innovative solutions to difficult problems." "As we leave the age of organized organizations and enter a world of more free-flowing forms, managers are required to rethink their roles and find fresh means of dealing with new challenges. In this book, Gareth Morgan shows how. He doesn't hammer the reader with a simplistic "cure all" technique or recipe. Rather, he invites us to explore and mobilize a capacity that we all possess. Every chapter demonstrates the approach in practice, encouraging us to "trust ourselves" in finding imaginative ways of dealing with the problems we face." "Imaginization is an amazing book: practical, deadly serious, light-hearted, accessible, powerful, and fun."--Jacket

The authors argue in this book that social theory can usefully be conceived in terms of four broad paradigms, based upon different sets of meta-theoretical assumptions with regard to the nature of social science and the nature of society. They provide extensive reviews of functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist and radical structuralist paradigms which derive from quite distinct intellectual traditions, and present four mutually exclusive views of the social world. Presented are a number of important contributions to our understanding of sociology and organisational analysis with a historical review and evaluation which provides a framework for appraising future developments in the area of organisational analysis, and suggests the form which some of the developments are likely to take
