American Catholics today : new realities of their faith and their church(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume interprets 18 years of gathered evidence and prognostications about the next generation of Catholicism in America. Gallup polls were conducted in 1987, 1993, 1999, and 2005 focusing on trends in Catholic thinking. The authors studied how Catholics participate in their faith and what attitudes characterize their practice. They offer evidence that American Catholicism is changing in the minds and hearts of every Catholic congregation. Blind adherence to statements and directives from church hierarchy is being supplanted by intelligent and socially committed folks taking responsibility for their own faith development. This book suggests that the future will see more Catholics making decisions about their own faith and fewer Catholics who are fervently committed to church life

American Catholics in transition by
William V D'Antonio(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"American Catholics in Transition reports on five surveys carried out at six year intervals over a period of 25 years, from 1987 to 2011. The surveys are national probability samples of American Catholics, age 18 and older, now including four generations of Catholics. Over these twenty five years, the authors have found significant changes in Catholics' attitudes and behavior as well as many enduring trends in the explanation of Catholic identity. Generational change helps explain many of the differences. Many millennial Catholics continue to remain committed to and active in the Church, but there are some interesting patterns of difference within this generation. Hispanic Catholics are more likely than their non-Hispanic peers to emphasize social justice issues such as immigration reform and concern for the poor; and while Hispanic millennial women are the most committed to the Church, non-Hispanic millennial women are the least committed to Catholicism. The authors are able to point to dramatic changes in and across generations and gender, especially regarding Catholic identity, commitment, parish life, and church authority. William V. D'Antonio, Michele Dillon, and Mary L. Gautier provide timely information pertaining to Catholics' views regarding current pressing issues in the Church, such as the priest shortage and alternative liturgical arrangements and same-sex marriage. The authors also provide the first full portrayal of how the growing numbers of Hispanic Catholics in the U.S. are changing the Church."--Www.Amazon.com

Do religious affiliations of elected officials shape the way they vote on such key issues as abortion, homosexuality, defense spending, taxes, and welfare spending? In this study, the authors trace the influence of religion and party affiliation in the increasingly polarized U.S. Congress over the past forty years. Drawing on key roll call votes, survey data, and extensive background research, the authors argue that the political ideologies of both parties have become grounded in distinctive religious visions of the good society, in turn influencing the voting patterns of elected officials.--From publisher description

Voices of the faithful : loyal Catholics striving for change by

"The clergy sex abuse scandal and cover-up was to the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. what Enron was to the financial world. Catholics felt pummeled by scandal and humiliated by the institutional corruption exposed to the public. In the face of failed leadership, a group of Catholics gathered in a church basement in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to share their experiences and search for ways to respond to the crisis. The Voice of the Faithful quickly became the most talked-about and influential new Catholic group in years." "Who where these active Catholics who found ways to make the news? Were they, as some feared, angry dissidents seeking to bring down a church and assume power for themselves? Or were they loyal Catholics striving to renew the church?" "Voices of the Faithful presents original research on the history, religious beliefs, practices, and attitudes of this new religious group. Based on their empirical research, the authors show that VOTF members represent educated and energetic people of faith with deep roots in Catholic culture and tradition. The authors also introduce assessments of VOTF from respected history and theologians."--Jacket

"Sociological research and methodology is often the subject of debate among sociologists. The pursuit of objectivity in sociological research, critical sociology, and the idea of sociology as a science ... each has transformed the way sociologists approach sociological research. This lesson also includes discussion of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and features a segment on sociologist Mitchell Duneier and his research on New York City homeless populations."

"This lessons looks at how such aspects of social interaction as language, humor and emotion can shape and change the way we view the world around us. Nowhere is this interaction more visible than in the fusion of language and emotion which characterize the world of politics. But social interaction in the more mundane world of everyday life can be just as significant. This lesson begins with a stand-up comedy show that helps us further understand the significance of humor, as both a form of self-expression and as a culturally specific method of social interaction."
