Few therapies in the history of medicine have enjoyed simultaneously such widespread acclaim and such universal condemnation as has hypnosis. To some extent these opposing attitudes still prevail. However, recent years have witnessed advances in experimental and therapeutic hypnosis which have tended to establish hypnotherapy firmly as a scientific treatment method. The present volume is a contribution to the growing literature on therapeutic hypnosis. It issues out of experimental work with hypnosis in the treatment of various emotional difficulties, and it attempts to delineate the utilities and limitations, as well as advantages and disadvantages, of hypnotherapy. A considerable portion of Volume One is devoted to a step-by-step description of the induction process, illustrating various induction methods by excerpts from transcriptions of actual hypnotic sessions. There is a didactic discussion of the principles of psychotherapy, and of the psychopathologic factors in the different disease syndromes. Therapeutic methods applicable to the existing dynamics and the contributions hypnosis has to make to the treatment plan are also elaborated on in some detail. Freud once humorously remarked that ""Anyone who wants to make a living from the treatment of nervous patients must clearly be able to do something to help them"". It is amazing how frequently this simple precept is ignored and, when a patient does not get well, how often the failure is attributed to lack of proper motivation, diminutive ego strength, latent schizophrenia, and a multitude of assorted resistances. Difficulties that arise during therapy are not due to a deliberate conspiracy of neglect on the part of the therapist. They usually come about because of obstructive situations tha

"The practice of hypnotherapy is dependent upon the use of the coordinated skills of hypnotic induction and psychotherapy. In Volume One the principles of hypnotic induction, as well as general applications of psychotherapy, were discussed in detail. The present volume describes the joint technics of hypnosis and psychotherapy by presentation of actual case material through complete transcription of a number of treatment sessions. In addition to several briefer examples, three complete psychosomatic cases are included, illustrative of the three main divisions of therapy presented in this volume. The first case is that of a patient with enuresis who was treated by means of symptom removal through prestige suggestion. The second case is one of premature ejaculation, treated by hypnosis with psychobiologic therapy. The third patient complained of severe, persistent headaches and was treated by re-education through hypnoanalysis. The use of complete case records makes it possible for the reader to follow the therapeutic process, the transference manifestations, the evidence of resistance, as well as the specific technics as they were applied in each particular case. The conclusions which have been presented in each of the three types of therapy--symptom removal, psychobiologic therapy and psychoanalytic therapy--are based on clinical experience with a fairly wide variety of cases. As more experience is gained in the different treatment methods, however, a modification and revision of these conclusions will undoubtedly be required"--Preface.
