Handbook of aging and the social sciences by Robert H Binstock( Book )

18 editions published between 1976 and 1985 in English and held by 1,601 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first of three volumes which comprise a review of the social, psychological, and biological aspects of aging. This volume organizes, evaluates, and interprets research data, concepts, theories, and issues in aging from the perspectives of the various social sciences. Intended for use by researchers, professional practitioners, policymakers, and students, the "Handbook" is organized into five sections. The first section, "The Social Aspects of Aging," considers the origins and scope of interest in aging as a social phenomenon, some of the presuppositions that underlie the study of age-related changes and the life span context in which aging takes place. A second section, "Aging and Social Structure," deals with changes in the age structure of populations, with the role and status of the aged in various societies, and with contemporary intergenerational relations. In the third section, "Aging and Social Systems," the contributors discuss differences among age strata in a variety of social systems, and how aging persons affect and are in turn affected by family life, housing and institutional arrangements, the economy, patterns of work, retirement and leisure, and the law and political systems. In the fourth section, "Aging and Interpersonal Behavior," the authors consider social networks, role changes through the life span, and death and dying. The final section on "Aging and Social Intervention" treats the political and strategic issues involved in contemporary and future societal efforts to provide and deploy income, health and social services, and other social resources to the aging. Old people in three industrial societies by Ethel Shanas( Book )

29 editions published between 1968 and 2007 in English and held by 951 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The description and present capacities of the elderly populations of Denmark, Great Britain, and the United States in relation to their social and economic circumstances are outlined in this study, using statistical data, interviews, and case studies. Aspects of the life of the elderly which receive extensive consideration include health; relationship with family; availability and use of medical and welfare services; emotional outlook, particularly as manifested in a sense of isolation, loneliness, or desolation; and financial resources and the role of the government in supporting low income receivers. The study concludes that, although the elderly are more strongly integrated into industrial society than is generally assumed, there is also an uneasy separateness of the aged that might best be characterized as a potential or embryonic "class." The cross-national nature of the study is intended to provide new insights into the adequacy of government provision for the elderly. (Mf)

This survey, sponsored by the Health Information Foundation at the University of Chicago and conducted at the National Opinion Research Center, consists of three component parts. Part 1, the Health Needs of Older Persons, covers health, the use of medical facilities, the cost of medical care, the older person's sources of income, his/her social relationships, attitudes toward younger family members, work, religion, and a self-evaluation of health status for persons aged 60 and over. Part 2, Household Enumeration: Noninterviewed Individuals, contains information describing persons located during the enumeration process who were unable to complete an interview. For Part 3, Public Attitudes on Older People, a cross-section of adult Americans was surveyed. This survey was mainly concerned with the level of responsibility younger and middle-aged people assumed for older relatives, the kinds of plans they were making for their own maintenance in later years, and overall attitudes on the part of all age groups toward certain situations that are commmon in later life
National Survey of the Aged [United States], 1962 by Ethel Shanas( )

5 editions published in 1985 in 3 languages and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This data collection contains the results of a survey of the aged in the United States in 1962. The study gathered information on the health, economic status, living arrangements, and family relationships of persons aged 65 years and older. The emphasis of the survey was on the general physical capacity of older people, the relationship of physical capacity to economic conditions, employment and retirement patterns, housing, and family and social relationships. The survey was designed to produce national estimates of the needs of older persons. In particular, the services that facilitate continued independent living arrangements were examined. The survey was conducted by the National Opinion Research Center and was part of a three-nation study in Denmark, Great Britain, and the United States (see NATIONAL SURVEY OF THE AGED [UNITED STATES], 1957 [ICPSR 7686] and NATIONAL SURVEY OF THE AGED, 1975 [ICPSR 7945]). In personal interviews respondents who were currently employed (and those who were retired or housewives) were asked for employment details and occupational history, their attitudes about work and retirement, and descriptions of their physical health, with specific questions asked of both nonambulatory and housebound persons, (e.g., if they needed
