"American farming has driven American life and fed much of the world for three centuries. Often in the words of farmers themselves, here is the story of what grows where and why, of America's primary farming regions east of the Rockies. What was it like "Back then" to be a farmer? What of the plight of the family farm, what of government programs? What shape will American farming take in the next century? This is a fully informed survey of our number-one industry by one of America's premier geographers."--Book review

The unknown world of the mobile home by John Fraser Hart( Book )

14 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 538 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In The Unknown World of the Mobile Home, authors John Fraser Hart, Michelle J. Rhodes, and John T. Morgan illuminate the history and culture of these often misunderstood domiciles. They describe early mobile homes, which were trailers designed to be pulled behind automobiles and which were more often than not poorly constructed and unequal to the needs of those who used them. During the 1970s, however, Congress enacted federal standards for the quality and safety of mobile homes, which led to innovation in design and the production of much more attractive and durable models. These models now comply with local building codes and many are designed to look like conventional houses. As a result, one of every five new single-family housing units purchased in the United States is a mobile home, sited everywhere from the conventional trailer park to custom-designed "estates" aimed at young couples and retirees. Despite all these changes in manufacture and design, even the most immobile mobile homes are still sold, financed, regulated, and taxed as vehicles."--Jacket

"In A Love of the Land, John C. Hudson has collected thirteen of Hart's seminal essays from the last fifty years, revealing the breadth and depth of Hart's work. In these pieces, Hart meditates on the meaning of geographical study, how to read the landscape, the impact of urban encroachment and suburban sprawl, the contemporary uses of land and space, and the changes wrought on rural landscapes by the modernization of farms and the growth of industrial agriculture. Whether Hart is writing about resort areas in Wisconsin, sheep farming in the British moorlands, change in the Corn Bell, the growing presence of mobile home parks, or tobacco barns and their changing role in the United States economy, he vividly narrates the age-old story of humans and their deep ties to the land, as he deftly blends facts and analysis with engaging anecdotes of his and others' experiences."--book jacket

My kind of county : Door County, Wisconsin by John Fraser Hart( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"My Kind of County offers an overview of Door County, Wisconsin, which outsiders have called "the Cape Cod of the Midwest." By any measure, it is certainly an icon of Wisconsin and the region. Its history is varied, exhibiting the presence of several European ethnic groups, and it includes some of Wisconsin's most charming settlements and outstanding cultural institutions. But it is Door County's physical geography, with its 300 miles of shoreline and limestone bluffs as high as 200 feet, that are primarily responsible for attracting more than two million visitors annually." "My Kind of County is based on Hart's fifty years of experience as a summertime resident of Ephraim, one of the county's most picturesque towns. As a geographer who is known internationally for his insightful interpretations of American places, Hart uses these five decades of observations and fieldwork to create a unique picture of Door County that interweaves history and geography with the contemporary scene." "Hart opens with essential information regarding Door County's land, water, and woods. He then focuses on its agricultural heritage, including its famous cherry orchards, before he delves into tourism, Belgian architecture, and the difference between the Green Bay side and Lake Michigan side. Interspersed throughout are beautiful color photographs as well as helpful maps and figures to guide the reader and visitor." "My Kind of County is an indispensable guide to this most famous American place."--BOOK JACKET
