"This book ... [shows] how the artist worked out his developing ideas primarily through drawing. Included are examples of work from his early years, such as the preparatory drawings he made as a muralist for the WPA in the 1930s, in addition to the increasingly abstract work of the 1940s and 1950s, and the sequence of pictorial experiments that led to his reintroduction of the figure in the late 1960s. Also reproduced, in color, are a number of painterly gouaches and a series of acrylics"--Back cover
Guston in time : remembering Philip Guston by Ross Feld( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 399 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the years following his controversial 1970 exhibition at the Marlborough Galleries, Philip Guston was generally viewed as yesterday's scandal, a maverick who had abandoned abstract expressionism and, with it, the adulation of the art world. Few paid serious attention to the disturbing, profound work he was producing in his Woodstock studio. So when Ross Feld, a young novelist and critic, wrote a penetrating review of Guston's latest show, the artist sent him a letter of appreciation: "I felt ... as if we knew each other and had many discussions about painting and literature. In a word'I felt recognition." Thus began a remarkable friendship. Feld, a frequent visitor to Guston's studio where the two men would talk late into the night, became Guston's intellectual sparring partner and sounding board'"I'll shout it right out," Guston wrote to Feld, "you inspire me to paint again!"'as well as the artist's most eloquent critic and champion. Guston in Time is Feld's final tribute, and it is at once a testament to a friendship, a provocative and richly nuanced study of one of the twentieth century's most important artists, and a portrait of a remarkable character
Philip Guston's Poor Richard by Philip Guston( Book )

6 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1971, the artist Philip Guston (1913-1980) created this series of caricatures of Richard Nixon, now available for the first time in book form. Produced two years before Watergate and three years before Nixon's resignation, these provocative, searing condemnations of a corrupt head of state are both a remarkable, prescient political satire and an aesthetic landmark - one of few instances of an artist in the late twentieth century engaging caricature in his work. -- from back cover
Philip Guston's late work : a memoir by William Corbett( Book )

3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William Corbett's memoir of Philip Guston focuses on their friendship over the last eight years of Guston's life and on the paintings and drawings Guston made during those years. Guston's figurative work, crude and bold images beautifully painted, turned the art world on its ear when they were first shown in 1970. Corbett explores themes of change, growth, doubt, freedom and risk as Guston's work and life exemplified them. This is not a book of art criticism; art jargon is avoided. It is a book that looks hard at Guston's late paintings and celebrates their humor, violence, mystery, and sustaining force
Telling stories : Philip Guston's later works by David Kaufmann( Book )

I have never seen a book that deals so extensively and usefully with the aesthetic and critical climate surrounding Guston, the allegorical interpretation of his work, or the role of his Jewishness in his art and thinking. Telling Stories is an original and stimulating contribution. Clark Coolidge

Philip Guston : the studio by Craig Burnett( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Philip Guston's The Studio (1969) depicts a member of the Ku Klux Klan painting a self-portrait. Darkly comic, crude and complex, The Studio is a key work in Guston's shift from abstract expressionism to his late figurative style. In this generously illustrated book, Craig Burnett examines Guston's engagement with the history and limitations of painting during the last decade of his life. Burnett reflects that The Studio signals not only a broader historical moving away from the medium-centric claims of modernist abstraction but also a personal shift to subject matter that was discursive, playful and carnivalesque. He argues that The Studio's existential 'play of self' and 'Kierkegaardian despair' is counter-balanced by the lure of compositional coherence to be found within paintings by artists such as Piero della Francesca, among others. Finally Burnett focuses on 'a passage of supreme poetry', the column of smoke central to The Studio, its importanceas a compositional device and its presence as a ghost of abstraction"--Book jacket
