What kind of love? : the diary of a pregnant teenager by Sheila Cole( Book )

8 editions published between 1995 and 2016 in English and held by 531 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A 15-year old becomes pregnant and deals with hard decisions. The use of the diary format makes this problem novel about a pregnant, 15-year-old teen accessible as well as immediate. It took only one sexual encounter, which Cole briefly describes, for Valerie Larch to become pregnant, and now, in typical fashion, she doesn't know what to do about the baby she carries. Cole slides quickly over the choices to focus mainly on the wish-fufillment scenario--the loving boyfriend says they'll marry. In the end, however, there's no romantic resolution: Val deals with the legacy of her irresponsibility by herself. Her decision to put the baby up for adoption is not achieved without some pain, but this book is not as wrenching as Geraldine Kaye's 1992 Someone Else's Baby, in which the young girl copes not only with pregnancy, but also with a dysfunctional family. Here, it's Val's determination to hang on to her romantic vision that drives the story. Plot and characterization are competently handled, however, and Cole avoids the sort of shrill preachiness that puts off YA readers

The autobiography of Alexander Luria : a dialogue with the making of mind by Michael Cole( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alexander Luria was one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. His official autobiography was written as a citizen of the Soviet Union, and while it provides a compelling story of his lifelong devotion to developing a comprehensive theory of the biological and cultural foundations of human nature, it is conspicuous for the absence of information about the social context of his work and his personal struggles to be a decent person in indecent times. The current ""dialogic autobiography"" brings the vitality of Luria's ideas back to life. Michael Cole and Karl Levit
