Frustration and aggression by John Dollard( Book )

28 editions published between 1939 and 1980 in 3 languages and held by 958 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the preparation of this book two aspects of the work of the Institute of Human Relations are illustrated. The first is that of cooperative research. The second aspect which this book illustrates is that of following a procedure of inquiry which is well known but seldom used in the social sciences. The problem of aggressive behavior is here advanced one step along this road which all social inquiry that aspires to become truly scientific must eventually follow. This step has consisted partly in a more systematic formulation and further elaboration of the Frustration-Aggression hypothesis which had already been stated by Freud and others, and partly in bringing together a larger body of relevant illustrative material. It is therefore in the nature of a second approximation looking toward a scientific theory of aggressive behavior. It is published in its present tentative form in the hope that it will stimulate further inquiry not only at the Institute but elsewhere. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)

Resolving conflict in Africa; the Fermeda workshop by Leonard W Doob( Book )

8 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Fermeda Workshop, held in August 1969, was the first attempt to employ a modified form of sentitivity training in an international setting. Three Yale professors - Leonard W. Doob (psychology), William J. Foltz (political science), and Robert B. Stevens (law) - brought together at the Fermeda Hotel, in the South Tyrol, six Somalis, six Kenyans, six Ethiopians, and four American trainers to see whether the use of T-groups would enable the Africans to comprehend more fully and propose solutions to the costly border disputes between their countries. In this book, three of the African participants - one from each country - present their reactions to the experience, and the American sponsors and trainers describe their impressions of what took place and what was accomplished. The chapters were all written independently of each other, and the evaluations of the experiment vary enormously from very positive to very negative. The sponsors hope that this unusually interesting case study in the application of social science to an international conflict will have far-reaching implications for all kinds of diplomacy and will constitute a contribution to the techniques of reducing international tension elsewhere in the world." -- Back cover

Intervention : guides and perils by Leonard W Doob( Book )

4 editions published in 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When is it appropriate to intervene in individual or large-scale disputes? How would intervention be most effective in helping an abused child, in resolving conflicts between labor and management, in mediating in a foreign war? In this wide-ranging and original book, a distinguished social psychologist provides a broad overview and analysis of the phenomenon of intervention in human affairs. Drawing on many historical and current examples of intervention, Leonard W. Doob considers what must be taken into account in the planning, selection, timing, implementation, and evaluation of interventions. He also focuses on the morality of intervening - which is, after all, interfering with the judgment or behavior of other persons - discussing a variety of situations, such as providing medical treatment to terminally ill people, preventing abortions, attempting to reconcile incompatible partners in a marriage, colonizing developing societies, and dividing countries after war. Doob maintains that since every intervention contains unique elements, strict principles for intervening cannot be formulated. Past experience does provide guides for the future; yet these guides are uncertain and must be used cautiously
