Distinction : a social critique of the judgement of taste by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

164 editions published between 1979 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 2,369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 'Distinction', Pierre Bourdieu brilliantly illuminates the social pretentions of the middle classes in the modern world. Focusing on the French bourgeoisie - its tastes and preferences - 'Distinction' is at once a vast ethnography of contemporary France and a dissection of the bourgeois mind
Reproduction in education, society, and culture by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

139 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in 10 languages and held by 1,776 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Oorspr. uitgave : Paris : Editions de Minuit, 1970 The authors develop an analysis of education. They show how education carries an essentially arbitrary cultural scheme which is actually based on power. More widely, the reproduction of culture through education is shown to play a key part in the reproduction of the whole social system
On television by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

128 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in 14 languages and held by 1,664 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On Television exposes the invisible mechanisms of manipulation and censorship that determine what appears on the small screen. Bourdieu shows how the ratings game has transformed journalism - and hence politics - and even such seemingly removed fields as law, science, art, and philosophy." "Bourdieu had long been concerned with the role of television in cultural and political life when he bypassed the political and commercial control of the television networks and addressed his country's viewers from the television station of the College de France. On Television, which expands on that lecture, not only describes the limiting and distorting effect of television on journalism and the world of ideas, but offers the blueprint for a counterattack."--Jacket
Outline of a theory of practice by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

119 editions published between 1972 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 1,643 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Outline of a theory of practice is recognized as a major theoretical text on the foundations of anthropology and sociology. Pierre Bourdieu, a distinguished French anthropologist, develops a theory of practice which is simultaneously a critique of the methods and postures of social science and a general account of how human action should be understood. With his central concept of the habitus, the principle which negotiates between objective structures and practices, Bourdieu is able to transcend the dichotomies which have shaped theoretical thinking about the social world. The author draws on his fieldwork in Kabylia (Algeria) to illustrate his theoretical propositions. With detailed study of matrimonial strategies and the role of rite and myth, he analyses the dialectical process of the 'incorporation of structures' and the objectification of habitus, whereby social formations tend to reproduce themselves. A rigorous consistent materialist approach lays the foundations for a theory of symbolic capital and, through analysis of the different modes of domination, a theory of symbolic power
The weight of the world : social suffering in contemporary society by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

100 editions published between 1993 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 1,636 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Confined to their governmental ivory towers, and with their eyes fixed on the opinion polls, politicians and state officials are all too often oblivious to the lives of their citizens. On the other hand, the ordinary men and women who have so much hardship in their lives, and so few means to make themselves heard, either protest outside the official frameworks or remain locked in the silence of their despair. Under the direction of Pierre Bourdieu, a team of sociologists spent three years analysing the new forms of social suffering that characterize contemporary societies - the suffering of those who are denied the means of acquiring a socially dignified existence, as well as the suffering of those who are poorly adjusted to the rapidly changing condition of their lives. Declining housing estates, the school, the family, street-level state services, the everyday world of social workers and policemen, factory workers and white-collar clerks, the universe of farmers and artisans, of teachers and the unemployed and partly employed: these are just some of the spaces where conflict occurs, where specific discriminations and recriminations, tensions and contradictions abound and accumulate, and where new forms of suffering are produced. This book can be read like a series of short stories - the story of a steelworker who was laid off after twenty years in the same factory and who now struggles to support his family on unemployment benefits and a part-time job; the story of a trade unionist who finds his goals undermined by the changing nature of work; the story of a family from Algeria living on a housing estate on the outskirts of Paris whose members have to cope with pervasive, everyday forms of racism; the story of a schoolteacher confronted with urban violence; and many others as well."--Book cover
The logic of practice by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

120 editions published between 1980 and 2014 in 11 languages and held by 1,555 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Masculine domination by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

104 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in 17 languages and held by 1,495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Masculine domination is so deeply ingrained in our unconscious that we hardly perceive all of its dimensions. It is so much in line with our expectations that we struggle to call it fully into question. Pierre Bourdieu's ethnographic analysis of gender divisions in Kabyle society, as a living reservoir of the Mediterranean cultural tradition, provides a potent instrument for disclosing the symbolic structures which survives in the men and women of our own societies." "Bourdieu analyses masculine dominations as a paradigmatic form of symbolic violence - the kind of gentle, invisible, pervasive violence which is exercised through cognition and misrecognition, knowledge and sentiment, often with the unwitting consent of the dominated. To understand this form of domination we must analyse both its invariant features and the historical work of dehistoricization through which social institutions - family, school, church, state - eternalize the arbitrary at the root of men's power. This analysis leads directly to the political question: can we neutralize the mechanisms through which history is continuously turned into nature, thereby freeing the forces of change and accelerating the incipient transformations of the relations between the sexes?" "This new book by Pierre Bourdieu - which has been a bestseller in France - will be essential reading for students and scholars across the social sciences and humanities, and for anyone concerned with questions of gender, sexuality and power."--Jacket
Homo academicus by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

94 editions published between 1984 and 2013 in 14 languages and held by 1,457 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pascalian meditations by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

51 editions published between 1997 and 2013 in 10 languages and held by 1,076 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this work, Pierre Bourdieu develops a critique of scholastic reason, making explicit the presuppositions entailed by the situation of ekbole of free time, liberated from the exigencies of the world, that makes possible a free and liberated relation to the world." "This critique is made in the name of Pascal because his thought expressed the features of human existence which the scholastic outlook ignores - his concern with power, custom, contingency and probability, his rejection of the search for foundations and his call for the kind of symbolic revolution which the social sciences must carry out in order to free themselves from the presuppositions of scholastic thought." "Through this Pascalian critique of scholarly reason, Bourdieu charts a negative philosophy which calls into question our most fundamental assumptions - such as that of a 'subject' which is free and transparent to itself - and which opens the way for a renewal of the social sciences and a reappraisal of the relation between the social sciences and politics." "This work will be essential reading for students of sociology, anthropology and the social sciences and humanities generally."--Jacket
The love of art : European art museums and their public by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

88 editions published between 1966 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 1,049 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Everyone can visit the art treasures held in the great museums of the world. And yet, in fact, museums are visited by only a small segment of the population. What are the characteristics of those who display their love of art by strolling through the aisles of museums, and what distinguishes them from the majority of people who are effectively excluded, or exclude themselves, from their doors? In this study, Bourdieu and Darbel address such questions on the basis of a wide-ranging survey of museum visitors throughout Europe. By examining the social conditions of museum practices, they show that cultivated taste is not a natural gift but a socially inculcated disposition which is distributed unevenly, and which predisposes some to distinguish themselves through their love of art, while others are deprived of this privilege
Language and symbolic power by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

67 editions published between 1991 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 991 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume brings together Bourdieu's highly original writings on language and on the relations among language, power, and politics. Bourdieu develops a forceful critique of traditional approaches to language, including the linguistic theories of Saussure and Chomsky and the theory of speech-acts elaborated by Austin and others. He argues that language should he viewed not only as a means of communication but also as a medium of power through which individuals pursue their own interests and display their practical competence."--

The field of cultural production : essays on art and literature by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

45 editions published between 1992 and 2011 in English and Portuguese and held by 939 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Field of Cultural Production brings together Bourdieu's most important writings on art, literature, and aesthetics." "Bourdieu develops a highly original approach to the study of literary and artistic works, addressing many of the key issues that have preoccupied literary, art, and cultural criticism in the late twentieth century: aesthetic value and judgement, the social contexts of cultural practice, the role of intellectuals and artists, and the structures of literary and artistic authority." "Bourdieu elaborates a theory of the cultural field which situates artistic works within the social conditions of their production, circulation, and consumption. He examines the individuals and institutions involved in making cultural products what they are: the writers, artists, publishers, critics, dealers, galleries and academies. He analyses the structure of the cultural field itself as well as its position within the broader social structures of power." "The essays in this volume deal with such diverse topics as Flaubert's point of view, Manet's aesthetic revolution, the historical creation of the pure gaze, and the relationship between art and power." "The Field of Cultural Production will be of interest to students and scholars from a wide range of disciplines: sociology and social theory, literature, art, and cultural studies."--Jacket

43 editions published between 1989 and 2010 in English and French and held by 937 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this major work, Bourdieu examines the distinctive forms of power - political, intellectual, bureaucratic and economic - by means of which contemporary societies are governed. What kinds of competence are claimed by the bureaucrats and technocrats who administer our societies? And how do those who govern come to gain the recognition of those who are governed by them?Bourdieu examines in detail the work of consecration which is carried out by the educational system - and especially in France by the grandes ecoles. The work of consecration can be seen in operation in different historical periods, whenever a nobility is produced. Today the socially recognized groups function according to a logic similar to that which characterized the divisions between high and low in the ancien regime. Today this state nobility is the heir - structural and sometimes even genealogical - of the noblesse de robe which, in order to consolidate its position in relation to other forms of power, had to construct the modern state and the republican myths, meritocracy and civil service which went along with it. Bourdieu examines the mechanisms which produce the kind of nobility displayed by those who govern, and the recognition granted to them by those who are governed by them
Le métier de sociologue préalables épistémologiques by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

126 editions published between 1967 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 871 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
