Distinction : a social critique of the judgement of taste by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

167 editions published between 1979 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 2,410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 'Distinction', Pierre Bourdieu brilliantly illuminates the social pretentions of the middle classes in the modern world. Focusing on the French bourgeoisie - its tastes and preferences - 'Distinction' is at once a vast ethnography of contemporary France and a dissection of the bourgeois mind
Homo academicus by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

65 editions published between 1984 and 2013 in 10 languages and held by 1,385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reproduction in education, society, and culture by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

79 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 1,293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The system of relations between the educational system and the structure of relations between the social classes is examined in this book. First, an effort is made to organize into a system amenable to logical verification not only propositions which were constructed in and for the operations of this research or were seen to be logically required as a ground for its findings, but also theoretical propositions which enabled the construction by deduction or specification of propositions amenable to direct empirical verification. Second is the application to a particular historical case (the educational system in France) of those principles. The system of relations between the educational system and the structure of relations between the social classes is examined from different perspectives: (1) an examination of the hypothesis that the productivity of formal education (I.E., education not accomplished by the family) is a function of the distance between the school and the home; (2) a discussion of the institutional means and social conditions which enable the educational system to perpetuate itself; (3) an explanation of the role of the examination in the French educational system in selection (both social and technical) and exclusion of students; and (4) an examination of the way in which the educational system legitimizes the social order. In all sections, emphasis is placed on the role of language in education. (Author/MC)
The inheritors : French students and their relation to culture by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

87 editions published between 1964 and 2013 in 8 languages and held by 1,282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- Back cover
The logic of practice by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

60 editions published between 1980 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 1,246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The craft of sociology : epistemological preliminaries by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

111 editions published between 1967 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has emerged as one of the most substantial and innovative bodies of theory and research in contemporary social science. Le métier de sociologue, both a textbook and an original contribution to epistemology in social science, focuses on a basic problem of sociological research: the necessity of an epistemological break with the preconstructed objects social practice offers to the researcher. Pierre Bourdieu and his co-authors argue in the epistemological tradition of scholars like Bachelard, Canguilhem, Koyré, a tradition that identifies the construction of the object as being the fundamental scientific act. Their way of discussing the issue makes it accessible not only to academics and experts of epistemology, but also to advanced students of social science, using for illustration a wide range of texts from the various social sciences as well as from philosophy of science. The fifth edition of Le métier de sociologue contains an interview with Pierre Bourdieu conducted by Beate Krais in 1988

On television by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

72 editions published between 1996 and 2012 in 7 languages and held by 1,134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On Television exposes the invisible mechanisms of manipulation and censorship that determine what appears on the small screen. Bourdieu shows how the ratings game has transformed journalism - and hence politics - and even such seemingly removed fields as law, science, art, and philosophy." "Bourdieu had long been concerned with the role of television in cultural and political life when he bypassed the political and commercial control of the television networks and addressed his country's viewers from the television station of the College de France. On Television, which expands on that lecture, not only describes the limiting and distorting effect of television on journalism and the world of ideas, but offers the blueprint for a counterattack."--Jacket

Pascalian meditations by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

42 editions published between 1997 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,027 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this work, Pierre Bourdieu develops a critique of scholastic reason, making explicit the presuppositions entailed by the situation of ekbole of free time, liberated from the exigencies of the world, that makes possible a free and liberated relation to the world." "This critique is made in the name of Pascal because his thought expressed the features of human existence which the scholastic outlook ignores - his concern with power, custom, contingency and probability, his rejection of the search for foundations and his call for the kind of symbolic revolution which the social sciences must carry out in order to free themselves from the presuppositions of scholastic thought." "Through this Pascalian critique of scholarly reason, Bourdieu charts a negative philosophy which calls into question our most fundamental assumptions - such as that of a 'subject' which is free and transparent to itself - and which opens the way for a renewal of the social sciences and a reappraisal of the relation between the social sciences and politics." "This work will be essential reading for students of sociology, anthropology and the social sciences and humanities generally."--Jacket
Outline of a theory of practice by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

41 editions published between 1972 and 2013 in English and French and held by 1,016 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Outline of a theory of practice is recognized as a major theoretical text on the foundations of anthropology and sociology. Pierre Bourdieu, a distinguished French anthropologist, develops a theory of practice which is simultaneously a critique of the methods and postures of social science and a general account of how human action should be understood. With his central concept of the habitus, the principle which negotiates between objective structures and practices, Bourdieu is able to transcend the dichotomies which have shaped theoretical thinking about the social world. The author draws on his fieldwork in Kabylia (Algeria) to illustrate his theoretical propositions. With detailed study of matrimonial strategies and the role of rite and myth, he analyses the dialectical process of the 'incorporation of structures' and the objectification of habitus, whereby social formations tend to reproduce themselves. A rigorous consistent materialist approach lays the foundations for a theory of symbolic capital and, through analysis of the different modes of domination, a theory of symbolic power
Masculine domination by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

45 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,004 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Masculine domination is so deeply ingrained in our unconscious that we hardly perceive all of its dimensions. It is so much in line with our expectations that we struggle to call it fully into question. Pierre Bourdieu's ethnographic analysis of gender divisions in Kabyle society, as a living reservoir of the Mediterranean cultural tradition, provides a potent instrument for disclosing the symbolic structures which survives in the men and women of our own societies." "Bourdieu analyses masculine dominations as a paradigmatic form of symbolic violence - the kind of gentle, invisible, pervasive violence which is exercised through cognition and misrecognition, knowledge and sentiment, often with the unwitting consent of the dominated. To understand this form of domination we must analyse both its invariant features and the historical work of dehistoricization through which social institutions - family, school, church, state - eternalize the arbitrary at the root of men's power. This analysis leads directly to the political question: can we neutralize the mechanisms through which history is continuously turned into nature, thereby freeing the forces of change and accelerating the incipient transformations of the relations between the sexes?" "This new book by Pierre Bourdieu - which has been a bestseller in France - will be essential reading for students and scholars across the social sciences and humanities, and for anyone concerned with questions of gender, sexuality and power."--Jacket
Language and symbolic power by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

70 editions published between 1982 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 989 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume brings together Bourdieu's highly original writings on language and on the relations among language, power, and politics. Bourdieu develops a forceful critique of traditional approaches to language, including the linguistic theories of Saussure and Chomsky and the theory of speech-acts elaborated by Austin and others. He argues that language should he viewed not only as a means of communication but also as a medium of power through which individuals pursue their own interests and display their practical competence."--
The field of cultural production : essays on art and literature by Pierre Bourdieu( Book )

46 editions published between 1992 and 2011 in English and Portuguese and held by 957 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Field of Cultural Production brings together Bourdieu's most important writings on art, literature, and aesthetics." "Bourdieu develops a highly original approach to the study of literary and artistic works, addressing many of the key issues that have preoccupied literary, art, and cultural criticism in the late twentieth century: aesthetic value and judgement, the social contexts of cultural practice, the role of intellectuals and artists, and the structures of literary and artistic authority." "Bourdieu elaborates a theory of the cultural field which situates artistic works within the social conditions of their production, circulation, and consumption. He examines the individuals and institutions involved in making cultural products what they are: the writers, artists, publishers, critics, dealers, galleries and academies. He analyses the structure of the cultural field itself as well as its position within the broader social structures of power." "The essays in this volume deal with such diverse topics as Flaubert's point of view, Manet's aesthetic revolution, the historical creation of the pure gaze, and the relationship between art and power." "The Field of Cultural Production will be of interest to students and scholars from a wide range of disciplines: sociology and social theory, literature, art, and cultural studies."--Jacket

44 editions published between 1988 and 2010 in English and French and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this major work, Bourdieu examines the distinctive forms of power - political, intellectual, bureaucratic and economic - by means of which contemporary societies are governed. What kinds of competence are claimed by the bureaucrats and technocrats who administer our societies? And how do those who govern come to gain the recognition of those who are governed by them?Bourdieu examines in detail the work of consecration which is carried out by the educational system - and especially in France by the grandes ecoles. The work of consecration can be seen in operation in different historical periods, whenever a nobility is produced. Today the socially recognized groups function according to a logic similar to that which characterized the divisions between high and low in the ancien regime. Today this state nobility is the heir - structural and sometimes even genealogical - of the noblesse de robe which, in order to consolidate its position in relation to other forms of power, had to construct the modern state and the republican myths, meritocracy and civil service which went along with it. Bourdieu examines the mechanisms which produce the kind of nobility displayed by those who govern, and the recognition granted to them by those who are governed by them
