Return to paradise by Breyten Breytenbach( Book )

20 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in 3 languages and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1975, Breyten Breytenbach, a young Afrikaner poet, painter, and ANC activist in exile, made a secret visit to his native South Africa. He was arrested, charged with treason, and imprisoned for seven years. Much has changed since those days: Nelson Mandela has been released, apartheid is on its way out, F.W. de Klerk has set in motion multiracial rule, and Breytenbach, the young rebel, has become one of his country's most respected figures, an insider-outsider with a unique view of South Africa and Africa as a whole. In rich, vivid, evocative prose Breytenbach captures Africa: primitive huts alongside modern airports; the constant migrations of peoples; the ethereal beauty of the land. We travel with him from town to town, from Kwamandlangampisi and Houtenbeck to Goshen and Atlantis. We hear jazz in Capetown and hippopotami oomphing in pools, we see cardboard slums for blacks and exquisite white suburbs - cool houses with luxuriant gardens behind security walls topped with broken glass. We read of principals chased from classrooms by their students, and police confiscating cameras; we pass paw-paw trees, avocado orchards, and the blackened ruins of schools and huts; we learn ancient fables and folk superstitions, and always reflect on politics. This is a poet's experience of Africa, at once unsparing and elegiac
Intimate stranger : a writing book by Breyten Breytenbach( Book )

7 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Addressed to a young writer, Intimate Stranger is an eclectic and generous work flowing with insight and wit. Breytenbach's candid and provocative reflections on reading and writing guide without guiding, open mental channels, surprise, and inspire. A stirring glimpse into the mind of an artist, Intimate Stranger is a river of experience and visions, brimming with sleights of tongue and overshifting in mood. This genre-defying gem makes manifest Einstein's assertion: 'Example isn't another way to teach, it is the only way to teach.'"--Publisher's website

Notes from the middle world by Breyten Breytenbach( Book )

8 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and Dutch and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In dialogue with the dead and living - Nelson Mandela, Mahmoud Darwish, Barack Obama - internationally distinguished South African artist and writer Breyten Breytenbach's new collection of essays traces the collisions between utopia and disaster, political traumas and the renewal of hope. Notes from the Middle World is a beautiful and heart-wrenching book. Against the conformity of power, Breytenbach takes readers on a journey through the 'Middle World, ' an imagined space beyond borders and exile, toward an embracing vision of justice for the un-citizens post-modernity has dispossessed."--Back cover
Nelson Mandela : the early life of Rolihlahla Madiba by Jean Guiloineau( Book )

"As a defender of social justice and champion of equal rights for South African blacks, Nelson Mandela is a world-renowned leader and a symbol of the movement against apartheid. This unique biography tells of Mandela's early years through the age of twenty-three - his upbringing and education, the rituals of tribal Africa and his right-of-passage ceremony, the early death of his father and his subsequent move to the home of the Paramount Chief, the Regent who became his adoptive father."

Voice over : a nomadic conversation with Mahmoud Darwish by Breyten Breytenbach( Book )

6 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mahmoud Darwish, the Palestinian poet (1941 - 9 August 2008), was a friend. I was on Gorée Island when I learned of his death during the course of an open-heart intervention in Houston, America. We had been together a few weeks earlier in Arles, the south of France. Even at noon the foyer of the hotel where we stayed was as if drained of light by dusk. He knew how serious his condition was - it was either the very risky operation or the possibility of dying at any moment from an exploding aorta - and with an ironic smile he speculated about his chances of survival. That night, as the sun was setting in a yellow flood over the ancient open air Roman theater and as birds began singing the accumulated sweetness of a summer's day, he publicly read one last time from his work. The poems were shot through by an ongoing conversation with death. Immediately after his passing, I started writing the above series as fragments of a continuing dialogue. In West Africa it was then the onset of the rainy season moving north, the 'petit hivernage, ' when black-blue clouds would skitter and close the skies. . . .The journey continues and the conversation will carry on, in the attempt to look for Mahmoud Darwish among the words
