In this video, a crucial scene from a seminar work in European drama is enacted in rehearsal, with the director, an actor, and an actress discussing their own lives in relation to interpretation of the roles. The scene selected from the August Strindberg play involves a struggle for power between the daughter of a nobleman and the servant of her father, as they remember the gulf between them as children and the present possibilities for a dangerous sexual alliance. The shifts in power and the variety of interpretation are subtle and fascinating. Patrick Stewart (seen as Oedipus Tyrannus in another play of the series) and Lisa Harrow (the daughter in 'Six Characters in Search of an Author') are visited backstage, as they work with BBC director Richard Callahan on how to play a powerful scene. The program concludes with a full-dress version of the scene
