The main focus of attention during the city of Leipzig's 10-day Bach festival was the Gewandhausorchestra's live performance of the sublime "Mass in B Minor, BMV 232." Recorded in the Church of Saint Thomas, where Bach served as musical director, the program features conductor Georg Christoph Biller, the cantor of St. Thomas Church, and various soloists.

Historical and iconographic evidence suggests that the Bach suites and other violoncello parts were intended to be performed on the viola or violoncello da spalla, which is played across the arm, rather than between the legs as with the modern violoncello.

Isabelle Faust has gone back to the original manuscript sources to offer us her version of a masterpiece of the violin repertoire. In Bach's time, music for solo instruments was still little explored territory, and his sonatas, partitas and suites immediately established themselves as a benchmark, technically challenging and brimming with creativity.

The music of the eighteenth century features delicate textures and refinement as well as expressiveness and energy. This was the age of the smaller chamber orchestra, and Bach was one of the compositional geniuses of the century. In this recording, the award-winning Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, which specializes in authentic reditions on fine reproduction period instruments, performs four delightful Bach suites, including No. 1 in C Major, No. 2 in B-flat Minor and Nos. 3 and 4 in D Major. The magnificent Palace Het Loo provides an elegant and fitting backdrop to each performance. Baroque specialist Ton Koopman conducts his orchestra from the harpsichord.
