Critique of judgment by Immanuel Kant( Book )

687 editions published between 1790 and 2017 in 11 languages and held by 5,958 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In THE CRITIQUE OF JUDGMENT (1790), Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) seeks to establish the a priori principles underlying the faculty of judgement, just as he did in his previous critiques of pure and practical reason. The first part deals with the subject of our aesthetic sensibility; we respond to certain natural phenomena as beautiful, says Kant, when we recognise in nature a harmonious order that satisfies the mind's own need for order. The second half of the critique concentrates on the apparent teleology in nature's design of organisms. Kant argues that our minds are inclined to see purpose and order in nature and this is the main principle underlying all of our judgements. Although this might imply a super sensible Designer, Kant insists that we cannot prove a supernatural dimension or the existence of God. Such considerations are beyond reason and are solely the province of faith
Critique of practical reason by Immanuel Kant( Book )

799 editions published between 1788 and 2016 in 17 languages and held by 5,197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kant's 1788 follow-up to his epochal Critique of Pure Reason analyzes the practical aspects of reason, which is concerned with will, or self-determination. He argues that the freedom of the will becomes the practical necessity of determining how one shall lead one's life, with the fundamental principle of morality being the "categorical imperative" stating that one should be obligated to act so that any moral action could be made into a universal law binding all mankind
Perpetual peace, and other essays on politics, history, and morals by Immanuel Kant( Book )

650 editions published between 1795 and 2017 in 18 languages and held by 4,536 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this short essay, Kant completes his political theory and philosophy of history, considering the prospects for peace among nations and addressing questions that remain central to our thoughts about nationalism, war, and peace." "Ted Humphrey provides an eminently readable translation, along with a brief Introduction that sketches Kant's argument."--Jacket
Kant's Critique of pure reason : an introductory text by Immanuel Kant( Book )

689 editions published between 1 and 2017 in 10 languages and held by 3,723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Considered to be one of the best translations, this edition includes Kant's original preface to the second edition of 1787. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is considered one of the giants of philosophy, of his age or any other and this was his foundational work on metaphysics
Immanuel Kant's Critique of pure reason by Immanuel Kant( Book )

156 editions published between 1881 and 2013 in English and German and held by 2,334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The text that follows is that of the second edition of 1787, and a translation is also given of all first-edition passages which in the second edition have been either altered or omitted. For this reissue of Norman Kemp Smith's classic translation, Howard Caygill has contributed a new Introduction which both sets this translation into the context of Kemp Smith's influence on Kant scholarship and assesses the impact of the Critique of Pure Reason itself. A new Further Reading section provides a useful guide for further study

Theoretical philosophy after 1781 by Immanuel Kant( Book )

21 editions published between 2000 and 2010 in English and held by 406 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, originally published in 2002, assembles the historical sequence of writings that Kant published between 1783 and 1796 to popularize, summarize, amplify and defend the doctrines of his masterpiece, the Critique of Pure Reason of 1781. The best known of them, the Prolegomena, is often recommended to beginning students, but the other texts are also vintage Kant and are important sources for a fully rounded picture of Kant's intellectual development. As with other volumes in the series there are copious linguistic notes and a glossary of key terms. The editorial introductions and explanatory notes shed light on the critical reception accorded Kant by the metaphysicians of his day and on Kant's own efforts to derail his opponents
Toward perpetual peace and other writings on politics, peace, and history by Immanuel Kant( Book )

17 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Über die Misshelligkeit zwischen der Moral und der Politik, in der Absicht auf den ewigen Frieden. - II. Von der Einhelligkeit der Politik mit der Moral nach dem transzendentalen Begriff des öffentlichen Rechts

All duties are either duties of right, that is, juridical duties, or duties of virtue, that is, ethical duties. Juridical duties are such as may be promulgated by external legislation; ethical duties are those for which such legislation is not possible
The science of right by Immanuel Kant( )

18 editions published between 2000 and 2017 in English and Dutch and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The theoretical knowledge of right and law in principle, as distinguished from positive laws and empirical cases, belongs to the pure science of right The science of right thus designates the philosophical and systematic knowledge of the principles of natural right. And it is from this science that the immutable principles of all positive legislation must be derived by practical jurists and lawgivers
A Kant dictionary by Howard Caygill( Book )

3 editions published in 1972 in English and German and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The completion of the human genome project in 2000 dramatically emphasized the imminent success of the genetic revolution. The ethical and social consequences of this scientific development are immense. From human reproduction to life-extending therapies, from the impact on gender and race to public health and public safety, there is scarcely a part of our lives left unaffected by the impact of the new genetics. A Companion to Genethics is the first substantial study of the multifaceted dimensions of the genetic revolution and its philosophical, ethical, social, and political significance. It brings together the best and most influential contemporary writing about genethics. Newly commissioned essays from prominent figures in the current debate provide a wide-ranging and fascinating scholarly analysis of all the issues that arise from this explosive science
