The critique of pure reason by Immanuel Kant( Book )

1,637 editions published between 1061 and 2015 in 21 languages and held by 12,529 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why this critique is called simply Critique of Practical Reason and not Critique of Pure Practical Reason, though the parallelism between it and the critique of speculative reason seems to demand the latter title, will be sufficiently shown in the treatise itself. Its task is merely to show that there is a pure practical reason, and, in order to do this, it critically examines reason's entire practical faculty. If it succeeds in this task, there is no need to examine the pure faculty itself to see whether it, like speculative reason, presumptuously overreaches itself. For if pure reason is actually practical, it will show its reality and that of its concepts in actions, and all disputations which aim to prove its impossibility will be in vain

"In this short essay, Kant completes his political theory and philosophy of history, considering the prospects for peace among nations and addressing questions that remain central to our thoughts about nationalism, war, and peace." "Ted Humphrey provides an eminently readable translation, along with a brief Introduction that sketches Kant's argument."--Jacket
Religion within the limits of reason alone by Immanuel Kant( Book )

329 editions published between 1793 and 2016 in 11 languages and held by 3,320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Overview: A Monumental Figure of Western Thought Wrestles with the Question of God. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Western philosophy. His contributions have had a profound impact on almost every philosophical movement that followed him. Kant's teachings on religion were unorthodox in that they were based on rationality rather than revelation. Though logically proving God's existence might be impossible, it is morally reasonable to "act as if there be a God." His strictly rational approach was considered so scandalous that the King of Prussia forbid him to teach or write further on religious subjects, which Kant obeyed until the king's death. A work of major importance in the history of Western religious thought, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone represents a great philosopher's attempt to spell out the form and content of a type of religion grounded in moral reason and meeting the needs of an ethical life

For this reissue of Norman Kemp Smith's classic translation, Howard Caygill has contributed a new Introduction which both sets this translation into the context of Kemp Smith's influence on Kant scholarship and assesses the impact of the Critique of Pure Reason itself. A new Further Reading section provides a useful guide for further study

Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view by Immanuel Kant( Book )

42 editions published between 1920 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,483 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View essentially reflects the last lectures Kant gave for his annual course in anthropology, which he taught from 1772 until his retirement in 1796. The lectures were published in 1798, with the largest first printing of any of Kant's works. Intended for a broad audience, they reveal not only Kant's unique contribution to the newly emerging discipline of anthropology, but also his desire to offer students a practical view of the world and of humanity's place in it. With its focus on what the human being "as a free-acting being makes of himself, or can and should make of himself," the Anthropology also offers readers an application of some central elements of Kant's philosophy. This volume offers a new annotated translation of the text by Robert B. Louden, together with an introduction by Manfred Kuehn that explores the context and themes of the lectures."--Jacket
Critique of the power of judgment by Immanuel Kant( Book )

16 editions published between 1995 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 712 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This entirely new translation of Kant's masterpiece follows the principles and high standards of all other volumes in The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant with extensive annotation, glossaries, and an index. This volume includes the indispensable first draft of Kant's introduction to the work. It is the only English edition to note the many differences between the first (1790) and second (1793) editions of the work, and among the copious citations and sources are references to the relevant passages on aesthetics in Kant's lectures on anthropology recently published for the first time in German." "All in all, this new edition offers the serious student of Kant a richer, more complete, and more accurate translation than has ever been available in English."--Back cover

The Science of Right has for its object the principles of all the laws which it is possible to promulgate by external legislation. Where there is such a legislation, it becomes, in actual application to it, a system of positive right and law; and he who is versed in the knowledge of this system is called a jurist or jurisconsult (jurisconsultus). A practical jurisconsult (jurisperitus), or a professional lawyer, is one who is skilled in the knowledge of positive external laws, and who can apply them to cases that may occur in experience. Such practical knowledge of positive right, and law, may
