NASA/DoD aerospace knowledge diffusion research project. results of the phase 1 mail survey--avionics and electrical components and subsystems perspective by Thomas E Pinelli( Book )

31 editions published between 1993 and 1996 in English and held by 1,400 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes similarities and differences between undergraduate and graduate engineering science students in the context of two general aspects of the educational experience. First, we explore the extent to which students differ regarding the factors that lead to the choice of becoming an engineer or a scientist, current satisfaction with that choice, and career-related goals and objectives. Second, we look at the technical communication practices, habits, and training of engineers and science (Physics) students. The reported data were obtained from a survey of students enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Bowling Green State University, and Texas A & M University. The survey was undertaken as part of the NASA/DoD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. Data are reported for the following categories: student demographics; skill importance, skill training, and skill helpfulness; collaborative writing; computer and information technology use and importance, use of electronic networks; use and importance of libraries and library services; use and importance of information sources and products; use of foreign language technical reports; and foreign language (reading and speaking) skills. The effects of nuclear weapons by United States( Book )

30 editions published between 1957 and 2006 in English and German and held by 897 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When 'The Effects of Atomic Weapons' was published in 1950, the explosive energy yields of the fission bombs available at that time were equivalent to some thousands of tons (i.e., kilotons) of TNT. With the development of thermonuclear (fusion) weapons, having energy yields in the range of millions of tons (i.e., megatons) of TNT, a new presentation, entitled 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, ' was issued in 1957. A completely revised edition was published in 1962 and this was reprinted with a few changes early in 1964. Since the last version of 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons' was prepared, much new information has become available concerning nuclear weapons effects. This has come in part from the series of atmospheric tests, including several at very high altitudes, conducted in the Pacific Ocean area in 1962. In addition, laboratory studies, theoretical calculations, and computer simulations have provided a better understanding of the various effects. Within the limits imposed by security requirements, the new information has been incorporated in the present edition. In particular, attention may be called to a new chapter on the electromagnetic pulse. The material is arranged in a manner that should permit the general reader to obtain a good understanding of the various topics without having to cope with the more technical details. Most chapters are thus in two parts: the first part is written at a fairly low technical level whereas the second treats some of the more technical and mathematical aspects. The presentation allows the reader to omit any or all of the latter sections without loss of continuity."--Preface

Reference manual for the Ada programming language by États-Unis( Book )

42 editions published between 1980 and 1983 in English and held by 640 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ada is the result of a collective effort to design a common language for programming large scale and real-time systems. This report is the proposed standard document for Ada. Since the early 70's, DoD has been committed to the use of High Order Languages and has developed an extensive set of requirements for a single language which could be adopted for use throughout DoD. In April 1978, the language designed by Jean Ichbiah and his team at Honeywell/Cii-Honeywell Bull, Paris, France, was chosen to be the new DoD language. For the ensuing fourteen months, Ada was subjected to an intense period of test and evaluation by the international computer science community and the design was modified in response to language issues raised during the test and evaluation. It will be added to the list of approved languages for use in DoD systems and promises to have a significant impact on DoD software development. Ada will be reviewed under American National Standards Institute (ANSI) canvass procedures for designation as an American National Standard and is on the agenda for the International Standards Organization (ISO). The DoD is concentrating on the development of compilers and an integrated programming support environment for Ada software. Although developed for use in DoD systems, Ada has generated considerable interest in the international computing community, particularly NATO, as well as in the U.S. commercial computing community. Initiated in 1950, this 2007 edition is the latest in a classic series of books of the same title. Journalist-historian S.L.A. Marshall wrote the first at the behest of Gen. George C. Marshall, who formed the great citizen army of World War II. The general believed officers of all services needed to base their professional commitment on a common moral-ethical grounding, which S.L.A. Marshall set out to explain. Ever since, these books have provided a foundation of thought, conduct, standards, and duty for American commissioned officers. Available now to the general public, this new edition
On "other war" : lessons from five decades of RAND counterinsurgency research by Austin Long( Book )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The challenges posed by insurgency and instability have proved difficult to surmount. This difficulty may embolden future opponents to embrace insurgency in combating the United States. Both the current and future conduct of the war on terror demand that the United States improve its ability to conduct counterinsurgency (COIN) operations. This study makes recommendations for improving COIN based on RANDÂs decades-long study of it

Heads we win : the cognitive side of counterinsurgency (COIN) by David C Gompert( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Current U.S. counterinsurgency strategy is in need of stronger cognitive capabilities that will enable the United States to "fight smarter." These include comprehension, reasoning, and decisionmaking, the components that are most effective against an enemy that is quick to adapt, transform, and regenerate. This paper offers concrete ideas for gaining the cognitive advantage in anticipating and countering the new global insurgency

Reconstruction under fire : unifying civil and military counterinsurgency( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is widely agreed that effective civilian relief, reconstruction, and development work can help convince people to support their government against insurgency. Knowing this, insurgents will target such work, threatening both those who perform it and those who benefit from it. Too often, the result is a postponement of efforts to improve government and serve the population until contested territory has been cleared of insurgents. This can lead to excessive reliance on force to defeat insurgents - at best, delaying and, at worst, preventing success. Unsatisfied with this general state of affairs, a RAND team with combined security and development expertise set out to learn how 'civilian counterinsurgency' (civil COIN) could be conducted more safely in the face of active insurgency, when it can do the most good
