Retirement by Frances M Carp( Book )

6 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 657 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This comprehensive look at retirement as a transitional life stage was instituted by the Federal Government in order to initiate theory building in this much neglected area. Conferences participated in by experts were held at intervals so as to maximize interactive thinking. Following this give and take, participants formulated theoretical models based on available research findings which were in turn criticized by other experts and re-worked by the authors. The models which emerged are contained in this volume and constitute the most complete analysis of the retirement process currently available. The chapters were written in non-technical style by eminent investigators from anthropology, economics, medicine, psychiatry, psychology and sociology. Titles of the 12 chapters are:"Retirement as a Transitional Life Stage, ""An Analytic Model for the Sociological Study of Retirement, ""Developmental Conceptions and the Retirement Process, ""An Anthropological View of Retirement, ""A Life-Cycle Perspective: Public Policies for Later Life, ""Retirement Strategy in an Evolving Society, ""Lay Observations on Retirement, ""Adjustment to Retirement: Substitution or Accommodation?""Adaptation to Loss of Work, ""Ego Psychological and Developmental Approaches to the 'Retirement Crises' in Men, ""Some Potentialities of a Life-Cycle Approach to the Study of Retirement," and "Beyond Retirement." 3 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 605 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reports the proceedings of the conference on the role of speech in language, the fifth conference in the "Communicating by Language" Series, sponsored by the Growth and Development Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The focus of the first group of papers is on the development of speech in man and child. The papers cover such topics as the origin of speech from animal sounds, symbols inside and outside of language, the evolution of speech and its human aspect, the movement from syllables to phonemes, phonetic feature analyzers and processing the speech of infants, developmental aspects of speech perception, and the interrelatedness of speech and language. The second group of papers concentrates on the area of language without speech, with discussions of sign language and its structure, including the encoding of information in sign language. The relationship between phonology and language is the topic of the third section, with papers concerning sound and its absence in the linguistic symbol, the role of phonology in language, and a discussion of the parallels in phonological and semantactic organization. The final paper, "Speech, Language and Communication," serves as a summary of the conference. (Clk)
