On being a Christian by Hans Küng( Book )
176 editions published between 1966 and 2012 in 12 languages and held by 3,865 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Can Christian faith continue to meet the challenges of today's world? Is the Christian message an adequate one for 20th-century men and women? In this brilliant study the controversy all Catholic theologian Hans Küng answers with a resounding "yes." Assessing the impact of other world religions, humanism, science, technology, and political revolution; and sifting through the theological controversies within the Christian community itself, Küng affirms the vitality and uniqueness of Christianity by tracing it back to its roots -- the reality of the historical Christ. For Küng's exhaustive scholarship is combined with a passionate belief in Jesus Christ as the center of existence. Beyond its historical and theological dimensions, however, On Being a Christian is a thorough re-examination of what it means to be a Christian today: the role of Christian ethics in a social and political context, the relationship between Christians and Jews, the organization of the community of believers, and practical suggestions for dealing with personal crises of faith. Written for both the scholar and the educated laity, this monumental work is destined to become a landmark of modern Christian thought. - Jacket flap
Does God exist? : an answer for today by Hans Küng( Book )
103 editions published between 1961 and 2013 in 9 languages and held by 2,824 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Does God exist? The question implies another: Who is God? This book is meant to give an answer to both questions and to give reasons for this answer. Does God exist? Yes or no? Many are at a loss between belief and unbelief; they are undecided, skeptical. They are doubtful about their belief, but they are also doubtful about their doubting. There are still others who are proud of their doubting. Yet there remains a longing for certainty. Certainty? Whether Christians or Jews, believers in God or atheists, the discussion today runs right across old denominations and new ideologies - but the longing for certainty is unquenched. Does God exist? We are putting all our cards on the table here. The answer will be "Yes, God exists," As human beings in the twentieth century, we certainly can reasonably believe in God - even more so in the Christian God - and perhaps even more easily today than a few decades or centuries ago. For, after so many crises, it is surprising how much has been clarified and how many difficulties in regard to belief in God have melted into the Light that no darkness has overcome
Christianity and the world religions : paths of dialogue with Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism by Hans Küng( Book )
70 editions published between 1984 and 2007 in 7 languages and held by 2,144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
There is a significant connection between ecumenism and world peace. Anyone who feels a sense of obligation toward the world community, who takes seriously the fragility of all human arrangements, who has glimpsed the possibilities of technical and human error, must know what is at stake here. He must know that the threat to peace and the need to regulate it have long since burst through the dimensions of the specific, reginoal conflict, and have become global politcal problems on which the survival of us all depends. The most fanatical, the cruelest political struggles are those that have been colored, inspired, and legitimized by religion. To say this is not to reduce all political conflicts to religious ones, but to take seriously the fact that religions share in the responsibility for bringing peace to our torn and warring world

Women in Christianity by Hans Küng( )
21 editions published between 2001 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 1,563 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For most of the religions of the world, women are a problem. From time immemorial they have been subordinate to men, second class in the family, politics and business with limited rights and even limited participation in worship. It is not only in Christianity that equal rights for women has been a scandalously neglected issue. By an examination of the history of women in Christianity, Kung points to the scandals of the past. The prohibition of women servers at Mass and of the ordination of women to the diaconate and the priesthood are symptomatic of a male dominated Church, which takes a consistently 'negative' attitude towards contraception, abortion and divorce. Roman Catholic Canon Law is androcentric and male dominated. From his position of intellectual freedom, as an independent Professor at the University of Tubingen, Küng is free to analyse the mistakes of the past and to sketch out a new theology of Women in the Church. This is not stridently feminist but sees the role of women as being vital for the development of the Church as an institution and for preaching the Christian Gospel. --From publisher's description
