Children teach children; learning by teaching by Alan Gartner( Book )

23 editions published between 1971 and 1996 in 3 languages and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book describes current educational programs in which young people have been tutoring younger students; the programs are based on the assumption that children learn more from teaching other children. To the degree that they offer a chance to enact an adult role, teaching tasks can provide reassurance and confidence for many youths. Strategies for innovation and implementation are presented. Particular tutoring programs are outlined in the appendices. (Author/JW)

After deschooling, what? by Alan Gartner( Book )

12 editions published in 1973 in English and Undetermined and held by 599 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume includes ten articles. In the first, "After Deschooling, What?" Ivan Illich goes beyond his argument for deschooling, to the beginning of some thoughts about what society and education might look like following it. The remaining nine articles contain the reactions of a number of serious and active educators to the Illich article. They each found the concept of deschooling useful as a framework for summarizing the problems of traditional education. But they differed on the degree to which Illich was useful and/or sensible outside the context of his critique. These articles are: "Toward a Political Economy of Education: a Radical Critique of Ivan Illich's 'Deschooling Society,'" Herbert Gintis; "All Schooled Up," Colin Greer; "Taking Illich Seriously," Sumner M. Rosen;"After Illich, What?" Judson Jerome; "The Case for Schooling America," Arthur Pearl; "Need for a Risk Quotient," Roy P. Fairfield; "And It Still Is News," Maxine Green; "My Ivan Illich Problem" Neil Postman; and, "After Deschooling, Free Learning," Ronald Gross. (Author/JM)

Paraprofessionals and their performance; a survey of education, health, and social service programs by Alan Gartner( Book )

8 editions published between 1971 and 1973 in English and held by 534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is primarily concerned with the quality of professional human services. To this topic are addressed two basic questions. First, what does the paraprofessional do? And second, to what effect does this quality relate to the consumer of these services? The book includes seven chapters, in which the following fields are considered: education, mental health, social work, health, and police and corrections. The multiplicity of evidence derived from the studies conducted leads to the conclusion that paraprofessionals play an important role as service agents and contribute positively to the well being of consumers in highly significant and often unique ways. The new assault on equality : IQ and social stratification by Alan Gartner( Book )

11 editions published in 1974 in English and Undetermined and held by 361 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book includes nine essays. In the Introduction: "The Lingering Infatuation with iq," the editors argue that since the iq test has again risen as an instrument of conservative policy, the test and the arguments built around it must be reexamined. Noam Chomsky criticizes the well-known "Atlantic" article, "iq" (September, 1971), in "The Fallacy of Richard Herrnstein's iq." In "Psychology's White Face," Ross A. Evans examines the major deficiencies in academic psychology as they relate to the black experience. Jerome Kagan examines the question of heritability in "What Is Intelligence?" In "Intro to Herrnstein 101" George Purvin combines his critique of Herrnstein's article with an account of his experiences in a class taught jointly by Herrnstein and Dr. Roger Brown at Harvard. David C. McClelland, in "Test for Competence Rather Than for 'Intelligence,'" reviews the criticisms that have been made of intelligence testing, focusing on the use of predictions of grades in school to validate intelligence tests, the role of abilities tapped by intelligence tests in determining job success, and the role of power in controlling life-outcome criteria; and suggests six alternatives. Stanley Aronowitz examines the role of social structure and dynamics in the perpetuation of intelligence testing in "The Trap of Environmentalism." Frank Riessman, in "The Hidden iq," discusses the influence of the testing situation on the determination of intelligence test scores. (Author/JM)
The preparation of human service professionals by Alan Gartner( Book )

7 editions published between 1976 and 2001 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New forms of preparing workers in the human services have the potential of changing and improving those services. A central feature of the new forms of preparation is that they must both be preparatory for the services and be characteristic of them (for example, if the services are participatory in nature, the training should also be so). There is a common cycle in the history of training for doctors, lawyers, social workers, and teachers. Initially, the training of practitioners took place outside the university. Around 1900 there occurred a movement of professional education into the university, with resultant changes in the nature of preparation and practice. Since World War ii both of these factors have been seriously questioned, under pressure for new, more responsive service systems. Along with efforts to change the forms of governance of the services, and efforts to bring some of those pressuring for change into the systems as servers, there were changes in the form and substance of training. How to individualize learning by Alan Gartner( Book )

4 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This article addresses the problem of achieving a successful program of individualized learning. Two major points are raised. First, the teacher should realize the importance of diagnosing and understanding the different learning style of each pupil. Some children learn more readily by reading, others by hearing. Some learn faster when they can be physically involved in the process. Some children like to work for long periods on one topic without a break; others shift back and forth from one subject to another. Study habits differ in children, and these, too, should be considered by the teacher. Second, the value of learning by teaching is emphasized as a tool that should be used more extensively. Cross age teaching reinforces what has been learned by the student who is helping a peer. The desirability of the teacher putting himself or herself into a co-learning position with pupils is also discussed. (Jd)
