This volume includes ten articles. In the first, "After Deschooling, What?" Ivan Illich goes beyond his argument for deschooling, to the beginning of some thoughts about what society and education might look like following it. The remaining nine articles contain the reactions of a number of serious and active educators to the Illich article. They each found the concept of deschooling useful as a framework for summarizing the problems of traditional education. But they differed on the degree to which Illich was useful and/or sensible outside the context of his critique. In the Introduction: "The Lingering Infatuation with iq," the editors argue that since the iq test has again risen as an instrument of conservative policy, the test and the arguments built around it must be reexamined. Noam Chomsky criticizes the well-known "Atlantic" article, "iq" (September, 1971), in "The Fallacy of Richard Herrnstein's iq." In "Psychology's White Face," Ross A. Evans examines the major deficiencies in academic psychology as they relate to the black experience. Jerome Kagan examines the question of heritability in "What Is Intelligence?" New forms of preparing workers in the human services have the potential of changing and improving those services. A central feature of the new forms of preparation is that they must both be preparatory for the services and be characteristic of them (for example, if the services are participatory in nature, the training should also be so). There is a common cycle in the history of training for doctors, lawyers, social workers, and teachers. Initially, the training of practitioners took place outside the university. Around 1900 there occurred a movement of professional education into the university, with resultant changes in the nature of preparation and practice. Since World War ii both of these factors have been seriously questioned, under pressure for new, more responsive service systems. Along with efforts to change the forms of governance of the services, and efforts to bring some of those pressuring for change into the systems as servers, there were changes in the form and substance of training. This article addresses the problem of achieving a successful program of individualized learning. Two major points are raised. First, the teacher should realize the importance of diagnosing and understanding the different learning style of each pupil. Some children learn more readily by reading, others by hearing. Some learn faster when they can be physically involved in the process. Some children like to work for long periods on one topic without a break; others shift back and forth from one subject to another. Study habits differ in children, and these, too, should be considered by the teacher. Second, the value of learning by teaching is emphasized as a tool that should be used more extensively. Cross age teaching reinforces what has been learned by the student who is helping a peer. The desirability of the teacher putting himself or herself into a co-learning position with pupils is also discussed. (Jd)
