Theology of the New Testament by
Rudolf Bultmann(
Book
)
180 editions published between 1900 and 2007 in 6 languages and held by 2,918 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"It is difficult to overestimate the singularity of Rudolf Bultmann. Bultmann's Theology of the New Testament changed the course of New Testament interpretation and has continued to influence the field until today. As ambitious in scope as it is consistent in method, Bultmann's volume asks and provides answers to the big questions. Bultmann also found a way to wed a sober-minded commitment to historical reconstruction to his deep desire for the New Testament to speak to contemporary humans."--Publisher's website

What is Christianity? by
Adolf von Harnack(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1950 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 1,083 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Harnack's work is considered by many experts in the field of theology to be unsurpassed. His approach is not meant to prove any set of dogmatic beliefs, as many Christian scholars set out to do, but is one of objectivity. His factual approach is not colored by the bias of trying to save souls or convert readers to the faith. He states early in the book that this is simply an historical approach to the question, What is Christianity? Subjects include The Leading Features of Jesus' Message, God the Father and the Infinite Value of the Human Soul, and large sections on The Gospel in Relation to Certain Problems, and The Gospel in History. He includes a fascinating study on how Roman Catholicism came into power during the 3rd to 6th centuries, and what facets or components of the Christian religion appeared during this time

Existence and faith : shorter writings of Rudolf Bultmann by
Rudolf Bultmann(
Book
)
36 editions published between 1960 and 1973 in English and held by 1,026 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"There would be no existentialism were not man concerned with the nature and destiny of his own existence. The fundamental principle of existential thinking is that man's existence precedes his essence. Essence - that abstraction by which traditional philosophy has sought to encompass the variety, immediacy, concreteness, and subjectivity of an individual human life - is for the existential thinker an irrelevance. Existential thinking has had its origins in the efforts of man to come to terms with his ultimate destiny. Such existential thinking - originating in the Bible and refined in the thought of St. Augustine, Pascal, Kierkegaard - was authentically religious. It is not unusual therefore that Rudolf Bultmann, one of the revolutionary innovators of twentieth-century theology, should have addressed himself to the problem of existence. Moreover, It is not unusual that the essays of Bultmann should reveal his abiding preoccupation with making clear the existential categories that underlie the faith of Christianity and the dilemmas of the modern man who would believe. Existence and Faith contains twenty hitherto untranslated essays which, although they range in content from 'Faith as Venture' and 'The Historicity of Man and Faith' to specific essays on 'Jesus and Paul' and 'The Sermon on the Mount and the Justice of the State, ' enjoy a unity imparted to them by Bultmann's passionate search for the meaning of human existence and faith"--Page 4 of cover

Myth and Christianity; an inquiry into the possibility of religion without myth by
Karl Jaspers(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1958 and 2005 in English and German and held by 1,008 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
One of the world's greatest living philosophers debates with one of the world's foremost theologians an issue of the utmost importance to this generation: Can Christianity survive as a vital force in the modern world? According to Bultmann, leading Protestant existentialist and a practising minister, the traditional religion of the West can best be rescued from skepticism if its "mythological" elements are dropped and only their meanings retained. Jaspers, a found of "Existenz" philosophy, opposes this view and contends that religion without mythology is impossible. In the course of this discussion, a number of basic philosophical, religious and social questions are re-examined, with results that have already had a crucial effect on modern thought
