Dictionary of race and ethnic relations by Ellis Cashmore( Book )

19 editions published between 1988 and 1996 in English and held by 598 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Issues of ethnicity and racial relations are almost universally seen as one of the prime motivating forces behind social conflict and change. The often volatile and complex nature of racial interaction resonates through all aspects of modern society. Even social issues which appear to have little or no connection to race often become entangled with ethnic friction to create far more complex problems. Race is also used as a powerful weapon by individuals and political organizations to further their own objectives. It is these issues and problems that the Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations addresses. Since the 1988 publication of the second edition of this acclaimed reference book there have been enormous changes in the area of race and ethnic relations throughout the world. In a comprehensive range of alphabetically arranged entries which cover legal concerns, historical developments, and important figures and concepts the Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations deals with these changes through in-depth articles which both define and analyze the terms. Developments in South Africa, the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, and the Clarence Thomas hearings are just a few of the broad range of up-to-date subjects covered. In addition, each entry provides a list of cross-references and further reading which make the book a valuable reference tool as well as a teaching aid

Hushed voices : unacknowledged atrocities of the 20th century by Heribert Adam( Book )

4 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Book Description: Unlike widely reported genocides - such as those in Nazi Germany, Rwanda, and Cambodia - some atrocities remain unacknowledged, denied, and excluded from history textbooks. Yet, the buried past is important. Not only because perpetrators of gross human rights violations should be held accountable, but also because victims and their descendants warrant recognition. Unacknowledged atrocities breed resentment, taint the collective identity of a nation, and cause divisions when future generations challenge the sanitized versions of history. Official silence about past misdeeds suggests complicity and promotes impunity. Above all, non-acknowledgment prevents learning from past injustices. Hushed Voices analyzes 15 key cases of forgotten mass political violence from around the world. These include: a) in Africa: Zanzibar, Zimbabwe's Gukurahundi, Biafra, the Algerian Harkis, and the Mau Mau anti-colonial rebellion; b) in the Middle East: Armenia, the Palestinian Nakba, and Hama in Syria; c) in Asia: Suharto's slaughter of half a million Indonesians, Imperial Japan, and Gujarati Hindu nationalism; d) in Europe: the Ukrainian Holdomor, the Spanish Civil War, Dresden, and the ethnic cleansing of Germans in Poland and Czechoslovakia after World War II. Theories of ethnic conflict, reconciliation, truth commissions, and post-conflict reconstruction are reviewed in the book's conclusion

This analysis sketches the historical record of Canadian policy toward South Africa. It probes the competing political forces in the ongoing South African transition, assesses the prospect of democratic success or failure and describes the ambiguous impact of Canadian efforts on the recipients in the white and black communities. It also reflects on possible changes, new foci, or even withdrawal of Canadian involvement from the Southern Africa region of the post-apartheid era
