James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was one of the most original artists of the late nineteenth century. Flamboyant dandy and ebullient publicist, friend of Oscar Wilde, Whistler was also a meticulous craftsman dedicated to the perfection of his art. Whistler was born in America but trained in Paris. He began as a realist painter but gradually developed a startlingly original method of composition, refining his technique to the barest essentials. He was one of the first to argue that the abstract ingredients of a painting - the lines, shapes, colours and tones - could in themselves be the subject; he entitled the portrait of his mother Arrangement in Grey and Black. This book provides a wide survey of carefully selected works, making it an ideal introduction to Whistler's art

After Whistler : the artist and his influence on American painting by Linda Merrill( Book )

7 editions published in 2003 in English and French and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated book - published to commemorate the centenary of the artist's death - addresses Whistler's extraordinary legacy and establishes his pivotal place in the history of American art." "After Whistler juxtaposes fourteen of the artist's most important works with an array of pictures by thirty-eight other American painters - including Henry Ossawa Tanner, William Merritt Chase, and John Singer Sargent - to demonstrate how Whistler's American contemporaries were affected by his techniques, color palette, compositions, and subject matter. The introduction to the book provides an overview of Whistler's association with American artists and the reception of his work in the United States. The essays that follow discuss Whistler's Venetian sojourn and its effect on the American artists who flocked to that city: his relationship with Philadelphia's art community; the Whistler Memorial Exhibition held in Boston in 1904; and much more." "This volume is essential reading anyone interested in American art and Whistler's role in it's history."--Jacket

Palaces in the night : Whistler in Venice by Margaret F MacDonald( Book )

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 498 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The year 1879 found the American artist James McNeill Whistler in London, in the dire financial straits which led to his bankruptcy. In September, armed with a contract from the Fine Art Society for a set of twelve etchings, he sought refuge in Venice. With his model and mistress Maud Franklin he stayed there for some fourteen months. The unique and timeless beauty of Venice inspired some of his greatest works: atmospheric oil paintings of Venetian nights, a hundred vivid pastels, and fifty of Whistler's finest etchings."
James McNeill Whistler : drawings, pastels, and watercolours : a catalogue raisonné by Margaret F MacDonald( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Painter, etcher, draughtsman, lithographer, watercolourist, and author of critical essays and aphorisms, James McNeill Whistler had a tremendous influence on the art and aesthetics of his era. Born in Massachusetts in 1834, he settled in London when he was twenty-five years old and for the next four decades produced hundreds of highly acclaimed (and sometimes highly criticised) works. His prodigious output and proficiency, along with his eccentricities, polemics, and arguments with critics, won him wide recognition. This catalogue raisonne of Whistler's drawings, pastels and watercolours makes available many of his works that have never before been exhibited or published and vividly demonstrates the wide range of his art. His drawings reveal the everyday working out of his ideas and note the world as it passed by Whistler with vigour and humour. The pastels include sensitive portraits, vigorous studies of models in the studio, and detailed views of Venetian palaces. The watercolours, perhaps his finest works, catch the subtle colours of northern skies and ever-changing seascapes

J.M.W. Turner, James McNeill Whistler, and Claude Monet created some of the most poetic landscapes of the 19th century. This beautiful book, which accompanies a major traveling exhibition, follows the three artists from the Thames to the Seine to the Venetian lagoon and is the first to explore the relationships among their works. Friends, collaborators, and rivals, Monet and Whistler adopted and built on themes first developed by Turner, including the creation of a series of views of the same landscape under different lighting and climatic conditions. Their attempts to imitate in oil the effects that Turner had achieved in watercolor and pastel transformed their style and would prove to be highly influential. In addition, they were inspired by Turner to seek beauty in the modern urban environment. In doing so, they created visionary works that contributed to Impressionism and Symbolism, and remain among the most beloved landscapes of the 19th century
The gentle art of making enemies : as pleasingly exemplified in many instances, wherein the serious ones of this earth, carefully exasperated, have been prettily spurred on to unseemliness and indiscretion, while overcome by an undue sense of right by James McNeill Whistler( Book )

Whistler's mother : an American icon( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 396 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated volume looks at the life of Anna Matilda Whistler, the genesis and history of the portrait, and examines the relationship between mother and son that inspired the painting. It explores the growth of Whistler's 'Mother' as a potent image, its appearance inspiring mass pilgrimages and adulation, and looks more broadly at the portrait of the artist's mother as a productive source of artistic inspiration following Whistler."--Jacket

With kindest regards : the correspondence of Charles Lang Freer and James McNeill Whistler, 1890-1903 by Charles Lang Freer( Book )

7 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 324 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With Kindest Regards records the extraordinary friendship between the American expatriate artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and his most significant patron, Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919). By the time the industrialist from Detroit met the artist in 1890, Whistler was as notorious for his irascibility as he was famous for his artistic productions. Freer, however, would always maintain that he had never met a truer, nobler man. Their correspondence reveals a warmth and generosity in Whistler that has gone largely unobserved." "The eighty-nine letters, telegrams, cablegrams, and calling cards chronicle the growth of Freer's Whistler collection, the largest and most important in the world. Linda Merrill sets the correspondence in context and traces the contacts between the two men during their long acquaintance. She observes how the previously unpublished letters cast new light on Freer's aesthetic education and expand the history of Whistler's later years. Even Freer's outstanding collection of Asian art began with the keen interest in Japanese art he shared with Whistler." "Illustrated with works from the Freer collection and vintage photographs from the Freer Gallery Archives, With Kindest Regards makes important original documents accessible for the first time, augments the legends of Whistler's personality, and reveals the foundation of Charles Freer's legacy to the United States."--Jacket

Whistler : a retrospective by Robin Spencer( Book )

14 editions published between 1989 and 1997 in 5 languages and held by 305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With this anthology of excerpts from letters, diaries, critical reviews, and other published writings of the time, leading Whistler scholar Spencer here does a great service to anyone interested in the painter and in the artistic and literary worlds of the late 19th century. His book is a vivid portrait of a perennially fascinating figure known as much for his acerbic tongue and libel case against Ruskin as for his atmospheric paintings. Period photographs help visually to set the scene, and thorough annotations accompanying each selection illuminate textual references to people, works of art, and events. Lush color plates, several of which fold out, are remarkably true to the originals. An excellent purchase for most libraries. - Library Journal
