The awkward embrace : one-party domination and democracy by Hermann Giliomee( )

25 editions published between 1999 and 2005 in English and held by 1,700 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Democracies derive their resilience and vitality from the fact that the rule of a particular majority is usually only of a temporary nature. Examining four case studies, The Awkward Embrace considers democracies of a different kind: rule by a dominant party which is virtually undefeatable. These systems have been called Regnant Democracies or Uncommon Democracies. They are characterized by distinctive features: the staging of unfree or corrupt elections, the blurring of the lines between ruling party, government and the state, the introduction of a national project which is considered to be above politics, and the erosion of civil society. The Awkward Embrace addresses major issues such as why one such democracy, namely Taiwan, has been moving in the direction of a more competitive system; how economic crises, such as that in Mexico, can transform the system; how government-business relations in Malaysia are affecting the base of the dominant party; and whether South Africa will become a one-party-dominant system."--Jacket
The last Afrikaner leaders : a supreme test of power by Hermann Giliomee( )

13 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 1,601 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

" ... Hermann Giliomee challenges the conventional wisdom on the downfall of white rule and the end of apartheid. Instead of impersonal forces, or the resourcefulness of an indomitable resistance movement, he emphasizes the role of Nationalist leaders and of their outspoken critic Frederick van Zyl Slabbert. What motivated each of the last Afrikaner leaders, from Verwoerd to de Klerk? How did each try to reconcile economic growth, white privilege, and security with the demands of an increasingly assertive black leadership and unexpected population figures? In exploring each leader's background, reasoning, and personal foibles, Giliomee takes issue with the assumption that South Africa was inexorably heading for an ANC victory in 1994. He argues that historical accidents radically affected the course of politics. Drawing on primary sources and personal interviews, Giliomee offers a fresh and stimulating political history that attempts not to condemn but to understand why the last Afrikaner leaders did what they did, and why their own policies ultimately failed them."--Publisher's description
The Shaping of South African society, 1652-1820 by Richard Elphick( Book )

40 editions published between 1979 and 2014 in English and held by 1,413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is about the formative years of the Cape, 1652 to ca. 1840. During this period two processes began which have since been the main themes of South African history: the integration of Southern Africa into a world economy and the dominance of Europeans over blacks. The book attempts to analyse the development of social and economic patterns and gives attention to all the peoples and classes who inhabited the Cape colony
The Afrikaners : biography of a people by Hermann Giliomee( Book )

34 editions published between 2003 and 2011 in English and held by 1,064 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Historian and political analyst Hermann Giliomee weaves together life stories and historical interpretation to create a narrative history of the Afrikaners from their beginnings with the colonization of the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch East India Company to the dismantling of apartheid and beyond. Throughout their history, Giliomee's Afrikaners are both colonizers and colonized. Actual or virtual servants of the Dutch East India Company, the Dutch 'burghers' nonetheless owned slaves and commanded servant labor." "While documenting - and in important ways revising - the history of the Afrikaners' pursuit of racial domination (as well as British contributions to that enterprise), Giliomee supplies Afrikaners' own, often divided perspectives on their history."--Jacket
