Use of electrical resistivity to detect underground mine voids in Ohio by Rodney A Sheets( )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 460 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Electrical resistivity surveys were completed at two sites along State Route 32 in Jackson and Vinton Counties, Ohio. The surveys were done to determine whether the electrical resistivity method could identify areas where coal was mined, leaving air- or water-filled voids. These voids can be local sources of potable water or acid mine drainage. They could also result in potentially dangerous collapse of roads or buildings that overlie the voids. The resistivity response of air- or waterfilled voids compared to the surrounding bedrock may allow electrical resistivity surveys to delineate areas underlain by such voids. Surface deformation along State Route 32 in Jackson County led to a site investigation, which included electrical resistivity surveys. Several highly resistive areas were identified using axial dipole-dipole and Wenner resistivity surveys. Subsequent drilling and excavation led to the discovery of several air-filled abandoned underground mine tunnels. A site along State Route 32 in Vinton County, Ohio, was drilled as part of a mining permit application process. A mine void under the highway was instrumented with a pressure transducer to monitor water levels. During a period of high water level, electrical resistivity surveys were completed. The electrical response was dominated by a thin, low-resistivity layer of iron ore above where the coal was mined out. Nearby overhead powerlines also affected the results
Design of concrete structures using high-strength steel reinforcement( )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 679: Design of Concrete Structures Using High-Strength Steel Reinforcement evaulates the existing American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications relevant to the use of high-strength reinforcing steel and other grades of reinforcing steel having no discernible yield plateau. The report also includes recommended language to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications that will permit the use of high-strength reinforcing steel with specified yield strengths not greater than 100 ksi. The Appendixes to NCHRP Report 679 were published online
Guide for pavement-type selection by John Hallin( )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 703: Guide for Pavement-Type Selection includes processes for conducting systematic evaluations of pavement alternatives and for making decisions on pavement-type selection. The processes may be used for both agency-based and contractor-based type selections and may be applied to different pavement types and structures"--Publisher's description

Design guidelines for increasing the lateral resistance of highway-bridge pile foundations by improving weak soils by Kyle M Rollins( )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 697: Design Guidelines for Increasing the Lateral Resistance of Highway-Bridge Pile Foundations by Improving Weak Soils examines guidance for strengthening of soils to resist lateral forces on bridge pile foundations. The report presents computational methods for assessing soil-strengthening options using finite-element analysis of single piles and pile groups and a simplified approach employing commercially available software"--Publisher's description
Proposed specifications for LRFD soil-nailing design and construction by Carlos Alberto Lazarte( )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 701: Proposed Specifications for LRFD Soil-Nailing Design and Construction contains proposed specifications for the design and construction of soil-nailed retaining structures. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standard Bridge Specifications, the AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, and the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications do not include guidance for soil-nailed structures. In the absence of AASHTO LRFD specifications, some state departments of transportation will not use soil-nailed retaining structures. Given the potential advantages of soil-nailed structures, there was a need to develop proposed standard design and construction specifications for soil-nailed structures for incorporation into the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design and Construction Specifications"--Publisher's description
