The natural house by Frank Lloyd Wright( Book )

68 editions published between 1954 and 1982 in 3 languages and held by 2,079 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When Frank Lloyd Wright turns his attention to one of the most important personal problems now facing practically everyone in our society - it is a time for rejoicing. The world's greatest architect here meets the urgent problem of suitable shelter for The Family in a democracy, in a magnificent and - as was to be expected - challenging book. Here, presented at last in full detail, is the natural house. The moderate cost houses described in this book and profusely illustrated with 116 photographs, plans and drawings, are houses - of infinite variety for people of limited means - in which living has become for their owners a purposeful new adventure in freedom and dignity. Mr. Wright tells the story of the world famous "Usonian" houses, so that we now see, in text and illustrations, how they have evolved from original conception to final execution. He has also written a step-by-step description of the "Usonion Automatic," explaining just how that remarkable house is built - a simplified method of construction so devised that the owners themselves can build it with great economy and beauty. For this purpose, there are, in addition to Mr. Wright's text, special photographs and drawings of the method and materials, showing clearly how the Usonion Automatic is built

The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright by Neil Levine( Book )

7 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 1,230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although a founding figure of modern architecture as well as its most celebrated and prolific practitioner, Frank Lloyd Wright has always remained elusively outside the mainstream. In this book, the architectural historian Neil Levine redefines our understanding of Wright in the first comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the architect's entire career since the opening of the Wright Archives. Making use of the architect's drawings, notes, writings, and personal and professional correspondence, the author weaves together historical and biographical material in a carefully documented, chronologically ordered framework that gives new meaning and relevance to Wright's enormously varied production. The main theme of Wright's work is the intimate relation between architecture and nature, as revealed through the processes of abstraction and representation. The power of its hold on us lies in the various ways Wright developed this idea for the suburb, the city, and the country, for environments as different as the American Midwest or Southwest and Baghdad, and for programs ranging from the single-family house and the suburban church to the museum and the civic center. Levine conveys the significance of the continuities and changes that he sees in Wright's architecture and thought by adopting a case-study method that focuses successive chapters on the architect's most important designs. The origins of the revolutionary Prairie House are traced to the Winslow House, its full manifestation being seen in the later Robie House. Taliesin, the Imperial Hotel, Hollyhock House, the textile-block houses and projects, Fallingwater, and Taliesin West are each given special attention. Discussions of the Guggenheim Museum, the proposed Baghdad Opera House, and the Marin County Civic Center show how Wright's later work, contrary to received opinion, opened up important new areas of investigation into the language of architectural expression. Levine's analysis of the representational imagery and narrative structure of Wright's buildings situates the architect's work in the general context of modern thought and gives this book a unique place in the writings on Wright
My father who is on earth by John Lloyd Wright( )

10 editions published between 1946 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

John assured his father that he would like the book and sent him a copy on its publication - 29 March 1946. A few days later, Frank Lloyd Wright returned this copy with numerous comments penciled in the margin, responding to what his son had written, and a request that a new, second copy be sent to him. John complied with the request, but first transcribed not only all his father's comments into the clean copy in black pencil but also his own answers to them in red pencil. He also transcribed all these comments into a third copy, again using colors to differentiate his comments from those of his father. The third copy is the basis for this newest edition of John Lloyd Wright's book

An organic architecture : the architecture of democracy by Frank Lloyd Wright( Book )

24 editions published between 1939 and 2017 in English and held by 651 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In May 1939, the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright visited London and gave four lectures at the Royal Institute of British Architects. The meetings were hailed at the time as the most remarkable events of recent architectural affairs in England, and the lectures were published as 'An Organic Architecture' in September 1939 by Lund Humphries. The texts remain an important expression of the architect's core philosophy and are being reissued now in a new edition to commemorate the 150th anniversary in 2017 of Frank Lloyd Wright's birth. In the lectures, Frank Lloyd Wright covers a wide range of topics including his Usonian houses, his visions for the future of cities both in North America and elsewhere, particularly in Britain, Taliesin and the Johnson Waxworks factory, the then-imminent Second World War, and the 'Future'. In doing so, his charismatic, flamboyant character leaps to life from the pages, not to mention his hugely creative intelligence, making these essays very enjoyable and entertaining. This new edition includes an insightful new essay by esteemed architectural historian, Professor Andrew Saint, which sets the lectures within context and highlights their continued resonance and appeal" -- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte
Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright( Book )

18 editions published between 1962 and 2016 in English and Japanese and held by 646 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Built in 1936 by now legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright for clients Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann, Fallingwater is hailed internationally as a masterpiece of twentieth-century architecture. A marvel of innovation and architectural daring, the house appears as if a part of the landscape, an outcropping of the western Pennsylvania wilderness. It seems to float over the rushing falls of Bear Run, upon the banks of which it is miraculously sited, like an impossible vision, a dream. Perhaps the most famous house constructed for a private individual, Fallingwater has since been entrusted to the stewardship of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and is visited annually by more than 150,000 visitors. In recent years recognized by the American Institute of Architects as the best work of American architecture of all time, there's no doubt as to the ongoing relevance of this important work by an American architectural giant. This landmark volume, published in association with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, commemorates the 75th anniversary of the house and is a major event in the story of this icon, with brand-new texts by leaders in the field on Fallingwater's history, structure, restoration, and collections. Destined to become the volume on the subject of this seminal monument, the book is a tribute to genius and the long-awaited reconsideration of this masterwork of world architecture
