Microprocessor-controlled communications in air terminal navigation systems by Stephen E Belter( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report documents the implementation of some old and new techniques to the problem of command-and-control signaling within a Category III instrument landing system. The old techniques include the use of tone signaling over balanced lines, along with isolation transformers and gas-discharge elements for lightning protection. The new methods include the application of microprocessor control devices to supervise, format, and interpret all communications. Additional features afforded by the microprocessor approach include automatic and manual maintenance logging at the control tower, more reliable transmission error detection, enhanced system status displays, and a self-contained operator training feature. Literature survey of cold weather construction practices by John A Havers( Book )

4 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of this study was to survey existing literature on cold-weather construction practices. The seasonality problem was defined and its economic and operational implications were identified. The effects of cold weather on men, material, and equipment were reviewed. Cold weather construction tasks were examined for technological constraints and comparisons were made with existing military and civilian codes. Research and observations pertaining to the construction tasks being examined were listed to provide a base for current and future development of cold-weather construction techniques. An attempt was made to analyze the natural and technological constraints imposed by the weather on men, material, and equipment. The economic feasibility of cold-weather construction was examined by reviewing the recorded experience of many segments of the international construction industry, and the economic advantages of cold-weather construction were listed

A description of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of water in the critical region by C. A Fritsch( Book )

2 editions published in 1960 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this study was to establish reasonable estimates of the values of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of water in the critical region was conducted. This was accomplished by reviewing the literature and utilizing available experimental measurements. The validity of the estimates was strengthened by the use of the principle of corresponding states after other considerations failed to contribute a description of these two transport properties in the critical region. The final results were expressions of a thermal conductivity excess and dynamic viscosity excess as unique functions of density
An analysis of specific heat data for water and water vapor in the critical region by E. S Nowak( Book )

2 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive review of the available data for the specific heat at constant pressure of water and water vapor is given for pressures from 14.22 to 4300 psia and temperatures from 680 to 800 deg F. In addition, a description is given of the various experimental techniques employed by different investigators to carry out measurements of this property
High-flux heat transfer studies : an analytical investigation of laminar film boiling by P. W McFadden( Book )

2 editions published in 1959 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An analysis was made of stable, laminar, free convection, film boiling from isothermal vertical plates and horizontal cylinders surrounded by a saturated liquid, where radiation was only of minor importance. The mathematical techniques of boundary layer theory were used and the boundary layer equations were reduced to ordinary differential equations by means of a transformation similar to those used in free convection and condensation. The equations were solved for: (1) compressible flow with variable specific heat, (2) variable specific heat and density variations considered only in the evaluation of the buoyant force, and (3) the case of constant properties. Numerical results were obtained for: (1) near critical water at 2800 and 3100 psia with wall to liquid temperature differences of 250, 500, and 1000 deg F; (2) for fluids with Prandtl numbers of 2/3, 1, and 2; and (3) for mercury and methanol film boiling at one atmosphere, considering constant properties. The results obtained by assuming constant properties were compared to: (1) the results obtained by considering variable properties, (2) experimental results, and (3) the comparable case of laminar film condensation. It was shown that the method of considering density variations only in the evaluation of the buoyant force is not valid in film boiling. It was also shown that the constant property solutions for heat transfer did not always agree with solutions obtained considering compressible flow and variable specific heat. An approximate analysis of a non-isothermal wall, including the effects of radiation, was presented. It was shown that for high emissivity walls at high temperature, radiation is the controlling factor in film boiling heat transfer
