The sun to the earth--and beyond : a decadal research strategy in solar and space physics by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sun is the source of energy for life on earth and is the strongest modulator of the human physical environment. In fact, the Sun's influence extends throughout the solar system, both through photons, which provide heat light, and ionization, and through the continuous outflow of a magnetized, supersonic ionized gas known as the solar wind. While the accomplishments of the past decade have answered important questions about the physics of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, and the space environments of Earth and other solar system bodies, they have also highlighted other questions, some of which are long-standing and fundamental. "The Sun to the Earth--and Beyond organizes these questions in terms of five challenges that are expected to be the focus of scientific investigations in solar and space physics during the coming decade and beyond

Confronting commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States by Institute of Medicine (U.S.)( Book )

11 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Every day in the United States, children and adolescents are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. These are not only illegal activities, but also forms of violence and abuse that result in immediate and long-term physical, mental, and emotional harm to victims and survivors. In 2013, the Institute of Medicine/National Research Council released the report Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States. The report found that the United States is in the very early stages of recognizing, understanding, and developing solutions for these crimes. Health care professionals need to be able to recognize past, ongoing, or potential victimization by commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking among the youth in their care. Failure to do so increases the possibility that those at risk may become victims, and victims may miss opportunities for assistance and remain vulnerable to further exploitation and abuse. This Guide for the Health Care Sector provides a summary of information from the original report that is most relevant to individuals who and settings that see children and adolescents for prevention and treatment of injury, illness, and disease. This includes physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, mental health professionals, and dentists who practice in settings such as emergency departments, urgent care, primary care clinics, adolescent medicine clinics, school clinics, shelters, community health centers, and dental clinics among others. This guide includes definitions of key terms and an overview of risk factors and consequences; barriers to identifying victims and survivors as well as opportunities for overcoming these barriers; examples of current practices in the health care sector; and recommendations aimed at identifying, preventing, and responding to these crimes."--Publisher's description
Monoclonal antibody production by Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (U.S.)( )

7 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) petitioned the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in early 1997 to prohibit the use of an animal in the production of mAb (monoclonal antibodies). NIH responded late in 1997, asserting that continued use of the mouse method for producing mAb was scientifically required. In a second petition, in early 1998, AAVS did not accept the NIH response. NIH asked the National Research Council to form a committee to study this issue. The Committee on Methods of Producing Monoclonal Antibodies was composed of 11 experts with extensive experience in biomedical research, laboratory animal medicine, pain research, animal welfare, and patient advocacy. The committee was asked to determine whether there is a scientific necessity for producing mAb by the mouse method and, if so, to recommend ways to minimize any pain or distress that might be associated with the method. The committee was also to determine whether there are regulatory requirements for the mouse method and to summarize the current stage of development of tissue-culture methods
Aviation fuels with improved fire safety : a proceedings by Committee on aviation fuels with improved fire safety (États-unis)( Book )

6 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The reduction of the fire hazard of fuel is critical to improving survivability in impact-survivable aircraft accidents. Despite current fire prevention and mitigation approaches, fuel flammability can overwhelm post-crash fire scenarios. The Workshop on Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety was held November 19-20, 1996 to review the current state of development, technological needs, and promising technology for the future development of aviation fuels that are most resistant to ignition during a crash. This book contains a summary of workshop discussions and 11 presented papers in the areas of fuel and additive technologies, aircraft fuel system requirements, and the characterization of fuel fires
