This study looks at the factors, both organisational and practical, affecting the activity and participation rates of women doctors. It is estimated that half of those entering medical schools will be women by the 1990s, and it is therefore important to assess the main influences on the careers of women doctors. Their contribution will be a key factor in future medical manpower planning and the Department of Health and Social Security, in initiating this research, recognised that it required more information on the careers of women doctors for four main purposes: 1) to be able to project more accurately the contribution women doctors will make in future towards the total supply of doctors, and, in particular, to anticipate any changes or trends in activity or participation rates; 2) to identify the main obstacles, whether institutional or domestic, which prevent women from participating as fully as they would like in medicine; 3) to improve the usefulness, accuracy and realism of careers advice in medicine at all stages from school to post-graduate training; 4) to assess the extent to which women doctors have found their aspirations limited more by the demands of the medical career system, based on the assumption of unbroken careers and full-time working, rather than by their own ambitions

Unemployment, public policy and the changing labour market by Michael White( Book )

4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The early 1990s witnessed a resurgence of mass unemployment, with altogether new patterns across regions, occupations and industries. This book considers the new unemployment and labour market conditions, and relates them to the issues and the options for public policy on unemployment and welfare. The book contains contributions from a wide variety of perspectives - economics, sociology, social history, and social policy analysis. Arising from a conference jointly sponsored by the Employment Service and the Policy Studies Institute, it includes the results of much new research and is an up-to-date source on the main current debates
