Gerrit Th. Rietveld, 1888-1964 : the complete works : Centraal Museum, Utrecht, 1992 by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld( Book )

25 editions published in 1992 in 4 languages and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As architect and designer, Gerrit Rietveld (Utrecht, 1888-1964) is one of the great international figures of this century. His work was basically user-friendly and he always tried to see architecture as something for people. Reacting against the conventions with which he had grown up, the driving force behind Rietveld's development became a quest for the essentials of architecture and design. This led in 1918 to the now over-familiar Red Blue Chair and six years after that to the internationally acclaimed Rietveld Schroeder House. This house, built in 1924, signified both an end and a beginning in Rietveld's career. Whereas in the preceding years he had progressed from cabinet-maker to architect and designer of a complete living environment, he was now to concentrate largely on architecture. More and more, he voiced his support for a functional architecture, in which he introduced new constructional methods and where the significance of form and colour was lessened. After the Second World War he contributed to the Dutch reconstruction. Neighbourhoods in Utrecht and Reeuwijk were built according to his design. Within the straitjacket of regulations, building stipulations and budgetary restrictions, Rietveld contrived to introduce in a highly original but flexible manner the functional and aesthetic principles that he had defined before the war. Always experimenting to find the right form, always faithful to his principles, his work was nevertheless of a huge diversity. This variety is what makes Rietveld what he is

Few know the full scope of Rietveld's oeuvre. He designed on every scale: from a bus stop to a small village. Commonly regarded as the most important architect within the De Stijl group, Rietveld was also one of the founders of CIAM. He continued his experiments right up to his death in 1964. His work and teachings have been a major influence in the world of architecture and design. Rietveld's Universe is a comprehensive publication presenting the results of new insights and research, including contributions by international leading scholars on t he subject. Focusing on the context in which Rietveld's work should be placed, this book addresses his interpretation of space and the way he designed it, as well as the mutual influences between his work and that of contemporaries such as Mondrian, Van Doesburg, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto

Beyond the Dutch : Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the visual arts from 1900 until now( Book )

9 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Beyond the Dutch" gives a colourful picture of that struggle. Leading artists, curators and historians from Indonesia and the Netherlands have pored over a series of questions posed by the history of art in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia. What was and still is Dutch about Indonesian art? What relationship does it have with Western techniques and views on art? How does contemporary art in Indonesia and the Netherlands allow for the links between the two countries? And how do we actually perceive Indonesian art? "Beyond the Dutch" is being published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The book takes three cross-sections through fine art in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia: the colonial period around 1900, decolonisation and independence around 1950, and the current, post-colonial period around 2000. Only by taking a detailed look at these three pivotal moments can a clear picture be obtained of the turbulent development of art in Indonesia. Exhibition: Oktober 16, 2009 to January 10, 2010
