The notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge by Rainer Maria Rilke( Book )

887 editions published between 1910 and 2022 in 33 languages and held by 5,143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The young Danish aristocrat Malte Laurids Brigge has been left rootless by the early death of his parents. Now living in Paris, Malte begins to record his life in a series of loosely connected notes, diary entries, prose poems, parables and stories, ostensibly collected by a fictional editor to form the Notebooks. Focusing on Malte's observations and experiences in the present, recollections of his childhood and family, and his reflections on historical events, these notes in highly crafted poetic prose explore the themes of life in the metropolis, poverty, sickness and death, love, memory and time, and perception and language. The only extended prose work by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge is a landmark in the development of the twentieth-century novel. It marks a radical departure from nineteenth-century realism, transcending conventions of linear narrative to reflect a consciousness in crisis, and an archetypal confrontation with the modern. -- Publisher (back cover)

Named for the Castle of Duino, on a rocky headland of the Adriatic, the Duino Elegies speaks in a voice that is both intimate and majestic on the mysteries of human life and our attempt, in the words of the translator, 'to use our self-consciousness to some advantage: to transcend, through art and the imagination, our self-deception and our fear.'

Rilke's book of hours : love poems to God by Rainer Maria Rilke( Book )

174 editions published between 1899 and 2020 in 7 languages and held by 1,368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the beginning of this century, a young German poet returned from a journey to Russia, where he had immersed himself in the spirituality he discovered there. He "received" a series of poems about which he did not speak for a long time - he considered them sacred, and different from anything else he ever had done and ever would do again. This poet saw the coming darkness of the century, and saw the struggle we would have in our relationship to the divine
New poems by Rainer Maria Rilke( Book )

222 editions published between 1881 and 2020 in 6 languages and held by 1,133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New Poems (1907-1908) represented a departure for Rilke from the traditional German lyric poetry of which he was then considered a master. Apparent in these poems is the influence of Rodin -- for whom Rilke had worked -- as well as other visual artists, including Hokusai, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Picasso. In this collection, Rilke forced his language to extremes of subtlety and refinement that only now, in Stephen Cohn's translations, is being captured properly in English

Mega Square Rodin features the best-known masterpieces of this genius of bronze and marble, who immortalised his revolutionary approach to sculptural subjects and the human body in figures that seem ready to come to life. This gift-sized book about a popular, brilliant sculptor is sure to appeal to a wide audience
Das Marienleben by Paul Hindemith( )

22 editions published between 1950 and 2018 in German and Undetermined and held by 954 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

... Rodin by Rainer Maria Rilke( )

28 editions published between 1943 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 890 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Influenced by the masters of Antiquity, the genius of Michelangelo and Baroque sculpture, particularly of Bernini, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is one of the most renowned artists in history. Though Rodin is considered a founder of modern sculpture, he did not set out to critique past classical traditions. Many of his sculptures were criticised and considered controversial because of their sensuality or hyperrealist qualities. His most original works departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, and embraced the human body, celebrating individualism and physicality. This book uncovers the life and career of this highly acclaimed artist by exploring his most famous works of art, such as the Gates of Hell, The Thinker and the infamous The Kiss
Uncollected poems by Rainer Maria Rilke( Book )

12 editions published between 1995 and 1997 in English and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between the New Poems of 1907 and 1908 and his death in 1926, Rainer Maria Rilke published only two major volumes of poetry - the Duino Elegies and the Sonnets to Orpheus, both in 1923. But during this period he wrote poetry continually, often prolifically - in letters, in guest books, in presentation copies, and chiefly in the pocket-books he always carried with him. The body of this uncollected work in German exceeds five hundred pieces, a remarkable number of which must be counted among Rilke's finest poems. They range from finished poems of great poise and brilliance, to headlong statements that hurtle through their subjects, to hauntingly self-contained "fragments", to short bursts that arc into the unpursuable. Together they share a nakedness and an immediacy of voice that make them feel uncannily contemporary and draw the reader close. Edward Snow's selection of more than a hundred of these little-known and neglected poems - the first edition of such scope for the general reader - distills the best of the uncollected poems while offering a wide enough choice to convey Rilke's variety and industry during the years he wrote them
Letters, summer 1926 by Rainer Maria Rilke( Book )

16 editions published between 1985 and 2001 in English and German and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Overview: Edited by Yevgeny Pasternak, Yelena Pasternak, and Konstantin M. Azadovsky. The summer of 1926 was a time of trouble and uncertainty for each of the three poets whose correspondence is collected in this moving volume. Marina Tsvetayeva was living in exile in France and struggling to get by. Boris Pasternak was in Moscow, trying to come to terms with the new Bolshevik regime. Rainer Maria Rilke, in Switzerland, was dying. Though hardly known to each other, they began to correspond, exchanging a series of searching letters in which every aspect of life and work is discussed with extraordinary intensity and passion. Letters: Summer 1926 takes the reader into the hearts and minds of three of the twentieth century's greatest poets at a moment of maximum emotional and creative pressure

An additional, detailed interpretive commentary will increase the English-speaking reader's understanding of Rilke's complex poetry
