The three general editors of the Cambridge Bible Commentary series have all, in their teaching, experienced a lack of readily usable texts of the literature which is often called pseudepigrapha but which is more accurately defined as extra-biblical or parabiblical literature. The aim of this new series is to help fill this gap. The welcome accorded to the Cambridge Bible Commentary has encouraged the editors to follow the same pattern here, except that carefully chosen extracts from the texts, rather than complete books, have normally been provided for comment. The introductory material leads naturally into the texts, rather than complete books, have normally been provided for comment. The introductory material leads naturally into the text, which itself leads into alternating sections of commentary. Within the severe limits imposed by the size and scope of the series, each contributor will attempt to provide for the student and general reader the results of modern scholarship, but has been asked to assume no specialized theological or linguistic knowledge

God's final envoy : early Christology and Jesus' own view of his mission by M. de Jonge( Book )

10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Steering a middle course between skepticism and absolute confidence regarding the reliability and the usefulness of what we know about Jesus from the early Christian sources, de Jonge carefully distinguishes between what seems certain, probable, and possible, and he argues that though we cannot fill in all the details, it is possible to present a picture of what was most characteristic of Jesus

A translator's handbook on the letters of John by C Haas( Book )

10 editions published between 1972 and 1987 in English and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This handbook, like others in this series, concentrates on exegetical matters that are of prime importance for translators, and it attempts to indicate possible solutions for translational problems that may arise because of language or culture. In this respect the Handbook attempts to deal with the full range of information important to translators. However, the authors do not attempt to provide help that other theologians and scholars may be seeking but which is not directly useful for the task of translating. It is assumed that such information is available elsewhere

From Jesus to John : essays on Jesus and New Testament christology in honour of Marinus de Jonge by Martinus C. de Boer( Book )

14 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marinus de Jonge was Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature at Leiden from 1966 to 1991. A former president of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, the International Society of New Testament scholars, he is best known for his work on the 'Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs' and on the Gospel and Epistles of John. More recently his work on Jesus and early Christology has received critical acclaim: 'Christology in Context. The Earliest Christian Response to Jesus' (1988) and 'Jesus: The Servant-Messiah' (1991). This volume of essays in his honour from a team of international scholars and admirers (from Holland, Great Britain, the United States, Norway and Germany) recognizes his singular and provocative contributions to our understanding of Jesus and New Testament Christology. The essays cover such topics as Jesus' self-understanding, the christological ascriptions of his earliest disciples and followers, the background to New Testament Christology in Judaism, the Christology of Paul, and the Christology of the Gospels, especially John. Together these essays constitute a significant contribution to the discussion about Jesus and the Christology of the earliest Christians

The life of Adam and Eve and related literature by M. de Jonge( Book )

11 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Life of Adam and Eve once belonged to the most popular literature in the Christian world. Retelling the Genesis 3 story, it gives an elaborate description of Adam's death and his assumption to Paradise in the third heaven. His continued existence, as well as his future resurrection, are as much a paradigm for humanity as his transgression, condemnation and death. For a long time attention was focused on the Greek and Latin versions only. More recently, editions of Georgian and Armenian versions have become available, occupying a middle position between the Greek and the Latin. This new material now makes it necessary to sort out the relationships between no less than five clearly related but in many respects different documents. Taken together they present a complex but interesting mosaic of reflections on the human plight, inspired by the Genesis story
