The theology of Karl Barth by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

54 editions published between 1951 and 2002 in 5 languages and held by 1,336 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Theology of Karl Barth shows how a rethinking of basic issues in fundamental theology--concerning the relation of nature and grace, philosophy and theology, the "analogy of being" and the "analogy of faith"--Might lead to a rapprochement between the two great rivers of Christianity, without compromising the center of gravity of either. In the process the book makes a major contribution to renewed understanding of Christianity in a secularized modern world

Herrlichkeit : eine theologische Ästhetik by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

197 editions published between 1961 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 784 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume initiates von Balthasar's study of the biblical vision and understanding of God's glory. Starting with the theophanies of the Patriarchal period, it shows how such glory is most fully expressed in the graciousness of the Covenant relationship between and Israel. But the breaking of that relationship by Israel means that in the later books of the Old Testament, the divine glory is seen in God's willingness to bear with his people in the dark side of their history. There is no final version of God's glory in the Old Testament. In the 500 years before Christ the Covenant relation is more idea than reality. The vision of the transcendent glory of God which is developed in the later writings, is only fragmentary. It will find its strange and unexpected fulfillment in the new Covenant
Love alone by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

83 editions published between 1963 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 781 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this newly translated book, von Balthasar delves deeper into this exploration of what love means, what comprises the divine love of God, and how we must become lovers of God in the footsteps of saints like Francis de Sales, John of the Cross and Therese of Lisieux
Theo-drama : theological dramatic theory by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

97 editions published between 1973 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 758 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the introduction to the second part of the trilogy which is von Balthasar's major work. The Glory of the Lord approaches revelation from the standpoint of the beautiful. The final part of the trilogy, the Theo-Logic, will treat Christian revelation from the standpoint of the true. In this first volume von Balthasar shows how many of the trends of modern theology (e.g. "event", "history", "orthopraxy", "dialogue", "political theology") point to an understanding of human and cosmic reality as a divine drama. He will then consider objections to such a theological dramatic theory and also the relationship between the Church and the theatre. This volume assembles the materials and the themes that will make it possible in subsequent volumes to develop this theological dramatic theory

Who is a Christian? by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

76 editions published between 1964 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 656 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The title of this book, Who Is a Christian?, is a short question. In its longer form, the question would be: In the changed circumstances after the Second Vatican Council--with its theme of aggiornamento, or "updating"--What does it really mean to be a Christian today? Von Balthasar begins by acknowleding the confusion of many in the post-conciliar period. He then describes the valuable contributions of the Council in these four areas: scripture, liturgy, ecumenism, and openness to the modern world. But he also describes what could go worng, and often did go wrong, with the implementation of the Council. Finally he points out the path to genuine renewal in the personal life of the Christian and in the ways he serves the world."--Back cover

Cosmic liturgy : the universe according to Maximus the Confessor by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

54 editions published between 1941 and 2003 in 4 languages and held by 592 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a powerful, attractive, religiously compelling portrait of the thought of a major Christian theologian who might, for this book, have remained only an obscure name in the handbooks of patrology. It is based on an intelligent and careful reading of Maximus's own writings. Here the history of theology has become itself a way of theological reflection

The office of Peter and the structure of the Church by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

47 editions published between 1974 and 2007 in 6 languages and held by 545 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this piece on the ministry of the Pope (the Petrine Office) and the nature of the Church, Hans Urs von Balthasar examines what he calls the anti-Roman attitude--a widespread hostility toward the Papacy. Unfortunately, this attitude exists even within the Catholic Church. How should we understand this? More importantly, how should we overcome it? Hans Urs von Balthasar answers these questions by providing a balanced discussion of the Papcy's place in the Church. He shows how the Office of Peter is an essential aspect of the ongoing life and mission of Christ's Church. On the one hand, the Papacy is not "above" the Church, the author insists, nor is the mystery of the Church reducible to the Papacy. On the other hand, the Petrine ministry of the Pope is a crucial element among other indispensable, constitutive principles, which include what von Balthasar calls the Johannine and Pauline dimensions, and above all else on the Marian aspect of the Church
A theological anthropology by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

10 editions published between 1967 and 2010 in English and German and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is not intended as a comprehensive treatise on the theology of man in history. A few main themes are dealt with in a cyclic way, with the same or similar problems being touched on frequently at different levels. The problem of time--the middle and the end of time--crops up again and again, as does also the problem of open reason and revelation, the problem of Jews and pagans, etc. The questions selected are aspects of the same subject: where must we look to discover, in the fragmentariness of our existence, a tendency towards wholeness?" The moment of Christian witness by Hans Urs von Balthasar( Book )

61 editions published between 1966 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Balthasar puts his finger on the precise origin of all those elements in modern Christianity which see the real Jesus Christ as unknowable, the Gospels as merely the confused reflections of later Christians, and Christian tradition as a perpetuation of the mythology
