The time of indifference by Alberto Moravia( Book )

450 editions published between 1929 and 2019 in 19 languages and held by 2,181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Set in Rome, The Time of Indifference tells a deceptively simple story. Five characters are cast loose on the sea of modern life - obsessed with what they want, what they feel they are owed, the wrongs that have been done them, their loneliness. The intrigues of these family members and lovers serve to expose the hollow core of bourgeois society in the early twentieth century, and what Moravia destroys forever in this pitiless novel is the illusion that a world of ever-growing material comfort can ever feed the human soul

It addresses large philosophical questions like the meaning of life, love and death, through the author's art
Time of desecration by Alberto Moravia( Book )

115 editions published between 1978 and 2019 in 10 languages and held by 1,161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traces the life of a young Roman woman from her girlhood through her shooting, in her 20s, of a young Milanese Marxist and her mother's financial adviser, both of whom have made sexual attacks on her. The young woman, appropriately named Desideria, passes as the daughter of the wealthy Viola (the name means violet but here implies violated), who is "of Italian parentage but American by birth and upbringing." Moravia emphasizes this "two-sided" quality, as the translator unluckily renders it, telling us in Davidson's English that Viola "was different when seen from the front or the back" -- old and wasted in front, young, "graceful, sensual, provoking" from the rear. She is also placed between the past, as the widow of a Greek husband, and the present, as the holder of an American passport. And she acts two roles, as Desideria's apparent mother and her incestuous lover

"Molteni, the narrator, aspires to be a man of letters, but has taken a job as a screenwriter in order to support his beautiful wife, Emilia. Frustrated by his work, he becomes convinced that Emilia no longer loves him--that in fact she despises him-- and as he relentlessly interrogates her about the true nature of her feelings, he makes his deepest fear (or secret desire) come true. Molteni is one of the great appalling characters of twentieth-century fiction--a man of sensitivity and intelligence who is incorrigibly blind to his own nature."--Back cover

"When Silvio, a rich Italian dilettante, and his beautiful wife agree to move to the country and forgo sex so that he will have the energy to write a successful novel, something is bound to go wrong: Silvio's literary ambitions are far too big for his second-rate talent, and his wife Leda is a passionate woman. This dangerously combustible situation is set off when Leda accuses Antonio, the local barber who comes every morning to shave Silvio, of trying to molest her. Silvio obstinately refuses to dismiss him, and the quarrel and its shattering consequences put the couple's love to the test." (Penguin Random House)
Two : a phallic novel by Alberto Moravia( Book )

94 editions published between 1971 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 863 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This novel, translated from Italian, centers around the dialogue between the male character and his prepotent penis, raising the question about the role of sexuality in creativity. The main character wishes to be a film director, but feels his sexuality interferes with his art. One reviewer noted there was about this book many pages of rather boring "tintillation but no consumation," while another labelled it "weird, but very interesting ..."
