Fiber optics, advances in research and development by Bernard Bendow( Book )

3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In June 1978 the University of Rhode Island conducted a three-day short course on Recent Advances in Fiber Optics. followed by a two-day conference on the Physics of Fiber Optics. The course contained over a dozen lectures spanning a wide range of subject matter from fundamental theory to operational systems. presented by well-known scientists from industry. government and academic institutions. The conference. on the other hand. emphasized basic research on fiber optics and related subjects. This volume contains both papers presented at the conference. as well as the majority of the lectures from the course (the written versions were solicited on a voluntary basis for this volume). In some cases the papers in this volume represent expanded or otherwise modified versions of the original presentations. One of the principal aims of the conference was promulgation of novel and/or unconventional concepts. For this reason. the papers in this volume cover subjects such as bistable optical switches. fiber acoustic sensors. extruded infrared fibers. compressively coated glass fibers. and soliton propagation in fibers

Toward a linking of motivational theories by Jennifer C Greene( Book )

3 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Motivation is widely believed to be a critical component of the learning process in the elementary classroom, but educational research has failed to substantiate this belief. To investigate interrelationships among selected motivational variables, demographic, motivational and achievement characteristics of 400 elementary school students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 were measured. Results indicated that ability and effort were the dominant causal factors in classroom motivational processes, although incentive value was also important. Classroom motivational processes were rooted, in part, in the degree to which an individual's self-concept of ability was realistic. The findings suggest that motivation is a dynamic process in which perceived outcomes are evaluated and then incorporated into one's self-concept of ability. (Jac)

Design and construction of driven pile foundations--lessons learned on the Central Artery/Tunnel project by Aaron S Bradshaw( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"Five contracts from the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project in Boston, MA, were reviewed to document issues related to design and construction of driven pile foundations. Given the soft and compressible marine clays in the Boston area, driven pile foundations were selected to support specific structures, including retaining walls, abutments, roadway slabs, transition structures, and ramps. This report presents the results of a study to assess the lessons learned from pile driving on the CA/T. This study focused on an evaluation of static and dynamic load test data and a case study of significant movement of an adjacent building during pile driving. The load test results showed that the piles have more capacity than what they were designed for. At the site of significant movement of an adjacent building, installation of wick drains and preaugering to mitigate additional movement proved to be ineffective. Detailed settlement, inclinometer, and piezometer data are presented"--Technical report documentation page
