Originally produced as individual silent motion pictures in France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States, these twenty-five short films epitomize the avant garde movement of the 1920's and 1930's. The films are drawn from the collection assembled by Raymond Rohauer, one of the nation's foremost proponents of experimental cinema, founder of the Hollywood Film Society, and longtime programmer at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. Rohauer helped preserve and promote avant-garde cinema, and these films from his personal archive are some of the most influential and eclectic short films made during the 20th Century

Picasso, Braque, Léger, and the Cubist spirit, 1919-1939 by Kenneth Wayne( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents art and design in France during the years between the two World Wars, in an effort to dispel the perception that Cubism was only a pre-World War I phenomenon. After the war, Cubist painting became more varied, colorful, and accessible, and began to affect other media such as furniture, fashion, cinema and architecture. What had begun as a rarefied pictorial style became a popular language. The first essay addresses Picasso's abundant and varied cubist painting. The second essay treats the art of three major Cubists -- Picasso, Braque, and Leger -- in the context of the various cubist idioms that developed. The third essay, also broad in scope, examines the significant relationship between Cubism and the decorative arts in France

Fernand Léger : contrasts of forms by Matthew Affron( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 1912 and 1914, Fernand Léger executed a large cycle of works known as the Contrasts of Forms. The series embraces the genres of landscape, still life, and figure, but at its core are numerous arresting compositions that sweep aside observation to focus on formal principles. The common denominator is a complex vocabulary of mingled cones, cylinders, cubes, and planes, vigorously outlined and scrubbed with color (in the paintings) or with black ink and white gouache (in the works on paper). The Contrasts of Forms are essential to two great chapters in the history of modern art in the years before the First World War: first, the development of cubism, and second, the emergence of abstract art
