From epic to canon : history and literature in ancient Israel by Frank Moore Cross( Book )

15 editions published between 1998 and 2000 in English and Undetermined and held by 684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In From Epic to Canon, Cross discusses specific issues that illuminate central questions about the Hebrew Bible and those who created and preserved it. He challenges the persistent attempt to read Protestant theological polemic against law into ancient Israel. Cross uncovers the continuities between the institutions of kinship and of covenant which he describes as "extended kinship." He examines the social structures of ancient Israel and reveals that beneath later social and cultural accretions, the concept of covenant - as opposed to codified law - was a vital part of Israel's earliest institutions. He then draws parallels between the expression of kinship and covenant among the Israelites and that among other ancient societies, as well as in primitive societies."--Jacket

Studies in ancient Yahwistic poetry by Frank Moore Cross( Book )

22 editions published between 1950 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 590 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ancient Yahwistic poetry is a particularly tempting field of study. In this small body of literature are preserved the oldest and most creative expressions of Israel's faith. This study of ancient Yahwistic poetry by Frank Moore Cross Jr. and David Noel Freedman untangles some of the serious textual difficulties and linguistic obscurities that have been a challenge to students of the Hebrew Bible for many generations." "The results of a joint doctoral dissertation originally submitted in 1950 and published in 1975, this volume has withstood the test of time; it offers analysis and conclusions regarding the Old Testament's Yahwistic poetry that remains as innovative and authoritative today as they were almost fifty years ago. Following an important introduction to the study of Yahwistic poetry, the book focuses in detail on "The Song of Miriam" (Exodus 15), "The Blessing of Jacob" (Genesis 49), "The Blessing of Moses" (Deuteronomy 33), and "A Royal Song of Thanksgiving" (2 Samuel 22 = Psalm 18). This edition also includes new prefaces by Cross and Freedman that give their present perspectives on this classic work in biblical studies."--Jacket

It provides a transcription of each identifiable fragment in consecutive biblical order together with the textual variants it contains. These manuscripts antedate by a millennium the previously available Hebrew manuscripts. They are the oldest, the best, and the most authentic witnesses to the texts of the Scriptures as they circulated in Jerusalem and surrounding regions at the time of the birth of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. The purpose is to collect in a single volume all the biblical editions originally published in a wide variety of books and articles."--Publisher's website
