The Amasis Painter and his world : vase-painting in sixth-century B.C. Athens by
Dietrich Von Bothmer(
Book
)
10 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 593 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Amasis Painter was one of ancient Greece's greatest vase painters, yet his own name has not been recorded, and he is known today only by the name of the potter whose works he most often decorated. A true individualist in the history of Athenian painting, he produced work distinguished by its delicacy, precision, and wit. When the Amasis Painter began his artistic career around 560 B.C., Attic black-figure vase-painting was already fully established and about to overtake Corinthian pottery in the competition for the Etruscan market. Toward the end of his extraordinarily long career around 515 or even later-the red-figure technique had been invented and was rapidly supplanting black-figure in fashion. By tracing the Amasis Painter's stylistic development from his earliest vases to his latest, this book offers a survey of Attic black-figure technique at the peak of its perfection. The book was prepared to accompany an exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1985-1986. The exhibition is the first ever to be devoted to the work of a single artist from ancient Greece, and twenty-two museums and private collectors have lent the vases on display."--GoogleBooks

Manet : portraying life by
Édouard Manet(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 479 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Depicting the Paris of his day, Edouard Manet (1832-1883) captured the nineteenth-century urban experience, legitimizing 'modern life' as an artistic subject. His detached, frank mode of looking and his subversive handling of both paint and subject-matter shocked his contemporaries, and eventually established his reputation as the father of modern painting. This remarkable book explores Manet's portraiture, a significant yet often neglected aspect of his work, including examples from throughout his career. Leading authorities provide a thorough review of the artist's stylistic evolution, considering the influence of seventeenth-century Dutch painters, parallels with the work of Renoir and links with early photography. Lavishly illustrated with paintings, works on paper, and photographs of models and sitters, this landmark study throws new light in the quintessential painter of modernity."--Rabat de la jaquette

Masterpieces of American glass : the Corning Museum of Glass, the Toledo Museum of Art, Lillian Nassau Ltd. by
Jane Shadel Spillman(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Did you know that glassmaking was America's first manufacturing industry? Or that American inventors led the world in developing faster and faster methods for mass-producing glass objects? From its early beginnings in Jamestown, Virginia, to its growth and development thorughout the United States, Masterpieces of American Glass traces from the 17th century to the present day. It's the story of how American glassmaking emerged from the stage where nearly everything made of glass was functional to the dramatic new phase when artists began to use glass to create art. Masterpieces of American Glass tells how the English Aesthetic and Art Nouveau movements influenced the design and shape the modern American glass. It highlights the work of great glass innovators and designers such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, who became famous in Europe for his work related to the Art Nouveau style, and Frederick Carder. And it also features more than a hundred magnificently colored illustrations taken from two of the most comprehensive collections in the world - The Corning Museum of Glass and The Toledo Museum of Art - each of which is located in an important American glassmaking center, and from Lillian Nassau Ltd., the leading dealer in Art Nouveau glass. Through its historical documentation and pictures, Masterpieces of American Glass provides vivid insights into who American are as a people and why this country developed as it did in the nearly 400 years since the first European colonists arrived here. These exceptional glass treasures will rekindle your interest in this art form. -- from dust jacket
