Adult learning characteristics are compared to those of the traditional student, and responsibilities of the colleges to recognize these characteristics and accomodate them are discussed. Institutional modifications in philosophy, image, access at all levels, bureaucratic routines, responses to subgroups such as the elderly, unemployed and handicapped, and tuition are examined. Problems regarding institutional adjustment to an increasingly older student body are also discussed, including faculty tenure and hiring practices, institutional budgets, financial resources, financial aid, and the attitudes of governing boards and state and federal legislative bodies.
