En 1943, dos de los tres inventores que se repartían la escena tras levantarse el telón de "Ni pobre ni rico, sino todo lo contrario", mantenían el siguiente diálogo: «—También he inventado una máquina muy grande. —¿Y para qué sirve? —No sirve para nada, pero es muy grande. En eso consiste su mérito: no cabe en una habitación». Cuarenta años después, un crítico dijo de las famosas esculturas de Richard Serra: su mérito consiste en que pesan más de 30 toneladas y no caben en una habitación. "Nihil novum". Cien años hace que nació Miguel Mihura; setenta y dos que escribió "Tres sombreros de copa". «Lo inverosímil, lo desorbitado, lo incongruente, lo absurdo, lo arbitrario, la guerra al lugar común y al tópico, el inconformismo, estaban patentes en mi primera obra escrita en 1932», declaraba el autor. Conviene recordar que esa primera obra fue escrita diecisiete años antes que "La cantante calva", de Ionesco. Pero, mientras Ionesco pudo estrenarla al año siguiente, Mihura tuvo que esperar veinte para estrenar la suya. La voz del precursor en el desierto. El teatro de Mihura levanta en escena una memorable galería de seres y situaciones. Personajes que quieren «sentir y padecer y reír y hablar con libertad», como la Irene de "Mi adorado Juan": ese hombre «que no hace daño a nadie, ni ambiciona nada, ni pone zancadillas, ni pretende ser algo más de lo que es»; personajes automarginados, que prefieren vivir en las márgenes de un río antes que en un ambiente edificado sobre tópicos; que miran el trabajo con distanciamiento y despego, no con la idolatría de una sociedad consumista que lo ha sacralizado para poder consumir más. Juan, el adorado Juan, «al éxito, a la fama, al dinero, a la vanidad, prefería el sol, los amigos, la humildad y las siestas interminables»
