Worker participation and American unions : threat or opportunity? by Thomas A Kochan( Book )

11 editions published between 1983 and 2013 in English and held by 628 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reports results of a study of the efects of quality of worklife programs and related forms of worker participation on unions and the collective bargaining process. Chapter 1 describes the evolution of worker participation in unionized settings and summarizes basic propositions in models of joint union-management change. In chapter 2 five case studies illustrate the dynamics of worker participation processes. Chapter 3 reviews the experiences of two major national unions and their industries--the United Steel Workers and seven major steel companies and the United Automobile Workers and General Motors and Ford Motor Company--with worker participation processes scattered across multiple plants. Each case illustrates the challenges involved in linking workplace participation programs to the broader, more centralized collective bargaining structure and the broader strategies of the union and employers involved. Chapters 4 and 5 analyze through survey and interview data the views that rank and file members and local labor leaders hold toward worker participation. Chapter 6 draws on data from interviews, speeches, other public documents, and selected internal union documents to present the views of key national labor movement leaders on worker participation. Chapter 7 highlights implications for the labor movement and the U.S. industrial relations system. (Ylb)
Converging divergences : worldwide changes in employment systems by Harry C Katz( Book )

20 editions published between 1999 and 2002 in English and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Exploring recent changes in employment practices in the automotive and telecommunications industries in seven industrialized countries (Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States), Harry C. Katz and Owen Darbishire find that traditional national systems of employment are being challenged by four cross-national patterns. The patterns, which are becoming ever more prevalent, can be categorized as low-wage, human resource management, Japanese-oriented, and joint team-based strategies." "The authors go on to show that these changing employment patterns are closely related to the decline of unions and growing income inequality. Drawing on plant-level evidence of emerging employment practices, they provide a comprehensive analysis of changes in employment systems and labor-management relations."--Jacket
Telecommunications : restructuring work and employment relations worldwide( Book )

10 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 465 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most employees in telecommunications, both white-collar and blue-collar, are unionized, and that has highlighted the tension between downsizing and participatory employment strategies. The authors describe adjustment paths adopted in the United States, England, Canada, and Australia which emphasize a technology- and market-driven approach, in contrast to Japan and several European countries where labor and social pressures have mediated the course and consequences of industrial adjustment. The strategic approach in Korea and Mexico is again different, relying on the state to set the pace and terms of change. The United States and United Kingdom have emerged as pattern leaders in the international telecommunications industry through their aggressive deregulation and restructuring. While downsizing has devastated employee morale, experiments in alternative solutions based on union and employee participation are simultaneously underway

Labor relations and public school desegregation in Los Angeles, Dade County, and Boston by Harry C Katz( Book )

3 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report analyzes and evaluates the interaction between public school desegregation (of both student and faculty populations) and faculty labor relations within the Los Angeles, Boston, and Dade County (Florida) school systems. Specific changes in personnel policies and collective bargaining agreements are examined and compared across three systems. The impact of environmental factors and enrollment trends on the course of desegregation and the conduct of labor relations are also discussed. Following the introduction, section two outlines some of the components of court desegregation orders and discusses the ways in which desegregation affects faculty labor relations. Section three includes case studies which examine the relationship between desegregation and faculty labor relations in the three school systems. Section four evaluates the success of the court's regulatory intervention in the three systems and suggests some of the factors that explain the observed variations of successful intervention. (Jcd)
