The Preschool in action: exploring early childhood programs by Ronald K Parker( Book )

3 editions published between 1972 and 1973 in English and held by 541 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a collection of papers on curriculum development in early childhood education. In Chapter 1, Bruner examines what is known about the effects of poverty on child development in Western culture, considers whether modern developmental theories aid in understanding the impact of culture (and specifically) poverty on children's growth, and discusses the implications of his findings for public policy. In Chapter 2, Blank presents 12 techniques that teachers can use when a child makes a wrong response. In Chapters 8 and 10-13, several curriculum specialists offer an updating and extension of their earlier conceptualization. Included are Nimnicht's responsive educational system, Robison's child curriculum, Engleman and Bereiter's academic preschool, Karnes' ameliorative curriculum, and Miller and Camp's program based on the Gray/Klaus Early Training Project. Six of the remaining chapters deal with developing curricula for preschool children, ages 3-6: Nedler describes her developmental process approach to curriculum design, Kamii and Hooper present two different applications of Piagetian theory, Weikart reports on the Unit Based Curriculum; Banta comments on Montessori curriculum, and Whitney and Parker provide an account of their Discovery Program. In two other chapters, Aaronson and Palmer discuss curricula designed for children between 15 and 36 months of age. (Jmb)

Open admissions : a bibliography, 1968-1973 by Sharad Karkhanis( Book )

1 edition published in 1974 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the City University of New York (cuny) announced its open admissions program in 1969, the principal impact seemed to be local. Since then, an enormous amount of material has been generated about open admissions. Cuny published and distributed this bibliography in the hope that it will add to an understanding of open admissions and to future discussions about it. The first part of this bibliography covers the cuny publications relating to open admissions. The section on articles includes papers that go beyond the mere description of the open admissions policy at cuny. The third selection of articles from the New York Times was based on the content of the article rather than just reporting the news. A few books and articles that were considered relevant to the concept of open admissions are included in the hope that they may add to the comprehensiveness of this study. (Author/PG)

The "method of inference" in foreign language study by City University of New York( Book )

3 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Chapters I and ii of this extensive report state the problem and objectives of a project in which recognition is given to the possibility of instructing students to make inferences as a means of extending the language learning beyond the classroom, language laboratory, and teaching machine. From this basic concept emerged three problem areas described in chapter iii and discussed in detail in following chapters. Thus, iv, v, and vi are concerned with the first problem area on how teachers might communicate and teach inference-making techniques to pupils. The "inferenceability" of french as a foreign language for american students is the next problem area dealt with in chapters vii and viii, which also describe instructional materials and procedures. The third and major concern is the students, and chapters ix and x discuss such related issues as (1) to what extent seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders are capable of making inferences, (2) whether they can adjust rationally to probabilistic information and to contradictory cues, and (3) whether this will enhance their foreign language achievement. The final chapter gives a summary and statement of future prospects. Tables and figures are included throughout the report, and five appendixes give the sample tests, and additional tables of intercorrelations of measurement of inference-making, general ability, and foreign language achievement.
