What clothes reveal : the language of clothing in colonial and federal America : the Colonial Williamsburg Collection by Linda Baumgarten( Book )

8 editions published between 2002 and 2011 in English and held by 978 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paintings of upper-class men and women tell an important part of the history of costumes, but surviving garments reveal even more. Every crease, stitch, and stain in a piece of clothing supplies valuable information about its wearer and its era. This stunning book features eighteenth - and early-nineteenth-century garments from the premiere collection of Colonial Williamsburg. Illustrated with more than 300 color photographs, including many details and back views, What Clothes Reveal treats not only elegant, high-style clothing in colonial America but also garments for everyday and work, the clothing of slaves, and maternity and nursing apparel." "Drawing on contemporary written descriptions and on actual costumes of the period, the book analyzes what Americans in the eighteenth century considered fashionable and attractive and how they used clothing to assert status or to identify occupations. The book also examines the myths and meanings of clothing in British and American society, clothing for the entire life cycle, and a history of clothing alteration. Informative sidebars on a variety of fascinating topics complete the volume."--Jacket

Southern furniture, 1680-1830 : the Colonial Williamsburg collection by Ronald L Hurst( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Southern Furniture 1680-1830: The Colonial Williamburg Collection goes beyond earlier aesthetic and stylistic analyses in providing the most recent information about the South's extensive cabinetmaking traditions. The book is divided into two parts. Three introductory essays explore the history, economy, ethnic and cultural diversity of the South's principal regions - the area around Chesapeake Bay, the backcountry, and the Carolina Low Country. Each essays draws a picture of the lifestyles and living conditions in these areas and examines work, leisure, architecture, and other elements of daily life, many of which are illustrated in drawings and engravings that portray people, houses, and a variety of activities of the period. A useful map leads off each of the three regional sections, enabling the reader to trace the sources of the furniture referred to later." "This overview is followed by a catalogue of 183 entries, each of which examines in detail many of the important objects in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The entries are divided into four sections based on type (seating furniture, tables, case furniture, and miscellaneous forms) and each section opens with meticulously labeled photographs of the object type that identify the key parts of the furniture referred to in the catalogue descriptions. This useful technical introduction serves as a visual glossary. Each entry begins with a full-page color photograph of the piece of furniture. These were made especially for this book, and following are additional color and black-and-white photographs of details of each object and of related pieces, totaling more than 800. In the readable and interesting entry texts, each artifact is examined in the historical context of its manufacture and use, along with a description of its aesthetic and symbolic functions."--Jacket

With The Colonial Williamsburg Tavern Cookbook, readers can re-create a vital part of the Williamsburg experience in their own kitchens. Inspired by Williamsburg's Southern heritage & proximity to the Chesapeake & the Atlantic--but with ingredients & methods updated for contemporary cooks--the dishes include down-home favorites & shellfish as well as irresistible comfort foods such as rib & pork roasts. Among the highlights are Standing Rib Roast with Yorkshire Pudding & Shields Tavern Sweet Potato Pie. The previous Colonial Williamsburg cookbook (1971) sold more than one million copies. This one has even more going for it, with an elegant design & full-color photographs that showcase not only the wonderful food, but also the interior decor, architecture, & gardens of one of America's most popular destinations. Every year, millions of people visit Colonial Williamsburg's re-creation of eighteenth-century America for the ambiance, the education, and the unparalleled experience of glimpsing our pre-revolutionary past. Williamsburg's fascinating form of time travel encompasses not only the architecture and the artisans, but all the details of our rich cultural heritage, including the food. And The Colonial Williamsburg Tavern Cookbook presents that food, our nation's culinary heritage: from stews and slaws and soups to puddings and pies and pot pies--nearly 200 recipes in all. Focusing on Williamsburg's Southern roots and coastal proximity, the dishes owe their inspiration to the distant past, but their preparations have been tailored for contemporary palates--no need to run out and get some suet in which to cook your mutton over the open hearth. Here are perennial standbys such as Brunswick Stew, Standing Rib Roast with Yorkshire Pudding, Virginia Ham with Brandied Peaches, and Cream of Peanut Soup, as well as Spoon Bread, Lemon Chess Pie, and Mulled Apple Cider. There are also unexpected twists on age-old favorites, such as Oyster Po' Boys with Tarragon Mayonnaise, Oven-Braised Gingered Pot Roast, and Carrot Pudding Spiced with Cardamom. Just as the historic town of Colonial Williamsburg is a singular adventure in understanding our nation's history, so too is this cookbook as a unique appreciation of our culinary history. In April 1772, George Washington, writing about one of the taverns in Williamsburg, noted, "Dined at Mrs. Campbells and went to the Play--then to Mrs. Campbells again"--Twice in a single week. The hearty fare that George found so enticing is enjoying a profound renaissance, and The Colonial Williamsburg Tavern Cookbook will enable home cooks to relive the great American culinary tradition--the ultimate in comfort food
