The church struggle in South Africa by John W De Gruchy( Book )

44 editions published between 1979 and 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Church Struggle in South Africa is for anyone interested in how divided communities reconcile difference and create hope for the future. This book, which has told the story of the struggle in South Africa for the Church over the last 25 years, is now publishing for the third time, with an almost complete picture of this story. With two new chapters, a new Preface from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and renewed interest in reconciliation from our current generation of thinkers, The Church Struggle in South Africa is well placed to serve all communities as an example of what can be achieved from situations of despair, segregation and difference. This book tells the story of the Christian Church in South Africa from its colonial beginnings until 1976, the year in which Steve Biko was murdered by the security police and the Christian Institute was banned. It goes on to tell the story of the Church following 1976 up until 1994, the year of transition for South Africa to a new democracy. During these years of repression the story was relayed through the growing resistance led by the United Democratic Front and the South African Council of Churches. The role played by church leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu is examined, as is the transition to democracy under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. Here the churches, in Mandela's words, acted as "midwives" of the birth of the new South Africa. The final chapters discuss the current situation in South Africa and the response of the churches to the challenging issues facing them today and in the future such as HIV and AIDS, Economic Development, Crime and Violence, Truth and Reconciliation, and Nation Building."--BOOK JACKET

Christianity and democracy : a theology for a just world order by John W De Gruchy( Book )

21 editions published between 1995 and 2010 in English and Japanese and held by 607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The need for global democratisation is now widely recognised, but there is considerable debate about what this means and how it can be achieved. In this important study John de Gruchy examines the historic and contemporary roles of Christianity in the development of democracy. He traces the gestation of modern democracy in medieval Christendom, and then describes the virtual breakdown of the relationship as democracy becomes the polity of modernity. Five twentieth-century case studies - the USA, Nicaragua, sub-Saharan Africa, Germany and South Africa - demonstrate the extent to which ecumenical Christianity has begun to reconnect with democracy and act as its contemporary midwife. De Gruchy argues that democracy needs to rediscover its spiritual heritage, while Christianity needs to develop a theology adequate for its participation in the realisation of a just democratic world order

Christianity, art, and transformation : theological aesthetics in the struggle for justice by John W De Gruchy( Book )

12 editions published between 2001 and 2008 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christianity, Art and Transformation explores the historical and contemporary relationship between the arts and Christianity with reference to the transformation of society. Several major themes are discussed, among them the power of images, the relationship between aesthetics and ethics, the nature of beauty and its redemptive capacity, aesthetic existence and Christian discipleship, and the role of art in the public square and in the life of the church. The book is a contribution to the study of theological aesthetics today from both an ecumenical and Reformed perspective, global in its scope yet rooted in the author's South African context."--Jacket

Bonhoeffer and South Africa : theology in dialogue by John W De Gruchy( Book )

7 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this stimulating book, John W. de Gruchy points out the relevance of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's thought for the life of the church in South Africa, engaging in dialogue the theology of Bonhoeffer and the theology of South Africa. Both Bonhoeffer's theology and his life bore witness to the need for Christians to come face to face with the pressing political and social issues of the day. Bonhoeffer believed that to bear an authentic witness to Christ in certain settings was to go against the stream; the church in South Africa, says de Gruchy, faces the challenge to be just such a 'troublesome witness.' He finds in Bonhoeffer's theology direction and liberation for the oppressed as well as for the privileged, who need to be 'freed for others.' Throughout, the book demonstrates the abiding significance of Bonhoeffer's theology, which, according to de Gruchy, derives from the fact that he was, before all else, a witness to Jesus Christ." - BOOK JACKET

The materials gathered and selected by his friend Eberhard Bethge in Letters and Papers from Prison not only brought Bonhoeffer to a wide and appreciative readership, especially in North America, they also introduced to a broad readership his novel and exciting ideas of religionless Christianity, his open and honest theological appraisal of Christian doctrines, and his sturdy, if sorely tried, faith in face of uncertainty and doubt
