The Zionist youth movements in Hungary, mainly in Busapest, became active in assistance to Jewish refugees in 1942, after an influx of refugees from Slovakia. The Vaadat ha-Ezra ve-ha-Hatzalah, formed in 1943, was eventually led by Slovakians, because of the conscription of Hungarian men into the military forced labor battalions. In autumn 1943 there was a wave of Polish refugees; those who had been members of Zionist youth movements aided in resistance activities, which included providing "Aryan" identity papers, planning escapes from ghettos, and smuggling Jews into Romania. In October 1944, when ca. 80,000 Jewish women were sent on death marches, the Zionist resistance set up children's homes and provided for thousands of children. Their headquarters, in the "glass house" set up by the Swiss consulate, protected ca. 2,000 Jews. In addition, they issued ca. 100,000 false "protective passes, " thereby saving thousands of Jews
