Handbook of research on mathematics teaching and learning by Douglas A Grouws( )

24 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in English and held by 2,021 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research in the area of mathematics education has flourished over the past two decades. The Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning is the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the best research, new developments, and critical conflicts and controversies in mathematics education. Sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and written by leading experts in the field of mathematics education, the Handbook is specifically designed to make important, vital scholarship accessible to mathematics education professors, graduate students, educational researchers, staff development directors, curriculum supervisors, and teachers. The Handbook provides a framework for understanding the evolution of the mathematics education research field against the backdrop of well-established conceptual, historical, theoretical, and methodological perspectives. It is an indispensable working tool for everyone interested in pursuing research in mathematics education as the references for each of the Handbook's twenty-nine chapters are complete resources for both current and past work in that particular area. The Handbook's twenty-nine chapters are organized into five major sections. Overview - presents a history of research in mathematics education, an analysis of how mathematics as a discipline has changed over time and how these shifts have influenced research, and a theoretical reconceptualization of one of the most crucial issues in mathematics education - the nature of understanding within the context of learning and teaching. Mathematics Teaching - includes articles on the culture of the classroom, effective teaching, teacher beliefs, classroom organization, and teacher education. Learning from Instruction - comprises chapters organized around mathematical domains that have been the focus of considerable research: additive structures; multiplicative structures; national numbers; problem solving; estimation; algebra, geometry, and spatial reasoning; probability and statistics; and proofs, limits, functions, and infinity. Critical Issues - considers such important issues in mathematics education as affect, evaluation, gender, ethnicity, and technology, while taking into account the evolution of these issues from teaching, learning, and research perspectives. Perspectives - offers viewpoints on international studies of achievement, international research, and reflections on the future of mathematics education

Professional development for teachers of mathematics : 1994 yearbook by Douglas B Aichele( Book )

8 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 688 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This National Council of Teachers of Mathematics yearbook, organized into three parts, provides a collection of articles on the professional development of teachers of mathematics. Based on known research, part 1 examines the issues associated with professional development and addresses the stages of the continuum of professional development from general to mathematics-specific perspectives. The articles in part 2 address the initial preparation of teachers of mathematics in grades k-12. A call for changing preservice programs is followed by descriptions of exemplary mathematics teacher education programs at all levels, k-12, including a model for a preservice program to prepare elementary mathematics specialists. Part 3 focuses on professional development for practitioners. These articles describe very creative projects and programs from the educational and business communities. High levels of cooperation and collaboration among those constituencies committed to reforming mathematics education are showcased throughout. (Mkr)

Mathematics for the middle grades (5-9) by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics( Book )

6 editions published between 1982 and 1986 in English and held by 639 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This yearbook for teachers of mathematics in grades 5-9 contains three sections: (1) critical issues; (2) learning activities; and (3) games, contests, and student presentations. The first section includes articles on sex-related differences, learning disabled students, computer literacy, mental arithmetic, rational numbers, and problem solving. In the second section are suggestions for a multidisciplinary unit, outdoor activities, mapping, geometry, spatial visualization, large numbers using calculators, decimals, using newspapers, using sports cards, taking an opinion poll, using graphics to display statistics, problem solving, and equation-solving skills. The last section presents games to teach fraction ideas, scientific notation, and algebraic concepts; and articles on planning a tournament, carnival, and fair. (Mp)

Developing computational skills by Marilyn N Suydam( Book )

7 editions published between 1978 and 1987 in English and held by 621 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (nctm) 1978 Yearbook contains fourteen articles covering a broad spectrum of computational topics. The first article considers the role of computational skills in the world of today and tomorrow. Several articles focus attention on how to help children master the basic facts. Algorithms for operations with whole and fractional numbers are considered in a number of articles, with suggested instructional sequences and teaching strategies. Assessing instruction to plan for diagnosis and remediation is discussed from three points of view, with specific difficulties pinpointed. The vital need to include estimation and mental arithmetic skills as computational goals is highlighted by an article proposing both specific procedures and guidelines. Embedding computational practice in other mathematical settings is the focus of another article, and finally, ways of using a calculator as a tool in developing mathematical ideas are presented.
