Poem of the Cid : a modern translation with notes( )

5 editions published between 1966 and 1998 in English and held by 1,366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new translation of a medieval Spanish epic. In The second cantar, one reads: The Moors finish setting up their camp/and the dawn finally comes. Their drums set up a faster beat, booming quickly. Mio Cid, who was in high spirits, said: 'Ya what a beautiful day!' Few works have shaped a national literature as thoroughly as the Poem of the Cid has shaped the Spanish literary tradition. Tracing the life of the eleventh-century military commander Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, called the Cid (from the Arabic Sayyidi, My Lord), this medieval epic describes a series of events surrounding his exile. The text of the poem survives in only one early thirteenth-century manuscript copied by a single scribe, yet centuries later the figure of the Cid still was celebrated in the Spanish popular ballad tradition. Today almost every theme that characterizes Spanish literature-honor, justice, loyalty, treachery, and jealousy-derives from the Poem of the Cid. Restored by poet and medievalist George Economou, this elegant and spirited translation by Paul Blackburn is judged by many the finest English translation of a great medieval poem
Proensa : an anthology of troubadour poetry by George Economou( Book )

14 editions published between 1978 and 2016 in English and held by 704 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This anthology of thirty troubadour poets of the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries constitutes the fullest presentation of Provencal poetry in English ... The body of poetry in this book represents a fusion of Latin, Arabic, and Christian cultures which occurred only once ... The tests are accompanied by the Vidas, later medieval vignettes of the poets."--Jacket
End of the game, and other stories by Julio Cortázar( Book )

Cronopios and famas by Julio Cortázar( Book )

8 editions published between 1969 and 1999 in English and held by 665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Long out of print and now reissued in paperback, Cronopios and Famas is one of the best-loved books by perhaps the greatest of Latin American novelists (author of Hopscotch and Blow Up and Other Stories). 'The Instruction Manual,' the first chapter, is an absurd assortment of tasks and items dissected in an instruction-manual format. 'Unusual Occupations,' the second chapter, describes the obsessions and predilections of the narrator's family, including the lodging of a tiger--just one tiger--'for the sole purpose of seeing the mechanism at work in all its complexity.' Finally, the 'Cronopios and Famas' section delightfully presents in the words of Carlos Fuentes, 'those enemies of pomposity, academic rigor mortis and cardboard celebrity--a band of literary Marx Brothers.' As the Saturday Review remarked: 'Each page of Cronopios and Famas sparkles with vivid satire that goes to the heart of human character and, in the best pieces, to the essence of the human condition'."--Back cover

Early poems, 1935-1955 by Octavio Paz( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The growth of the work of Octavio Paz makes it clear that he is a great world-poet. His poetry bears both native Mexico and Spanish-European influences. Images abound from Mexico's Indian past and her colorful contemporary life and landscape; striking portraits bring to life moments from his country's history which he then translates to the modern scene. Often revealing a suppressed violence, Paz's poems clearly bear the stamp of the cosmopolitan writer, critic, and diplomat. -- Publisher description
