In pursuit of perfection : courtly love in medieval literature by Joan M Ferrante( Book )

10 editions published between 1974 and 1975 in English and Spanish and held by 1,007 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This unique study is the result of the combined efforts of six eminently qualified scholars of medieval literature. Through intensive analysis of the major genres -- lyric, romance, allegory and fabliau -- the authors trace the evolution of the fascinating and complex phenomenon known as "courtly love". The authors do not attempt to explain the historical origins of courtly love -- avoiding the controversies that have resulted in conflicting and confusing views -- but rather are committed to exploring its presence and meaning in medieval texts. The collective approach to courtly love is also innovative in its elucidation of facets of the concept hitherto overlooked: the subtle and complex relationship of the poet and the audience, for example, and the paradoxical rejection and subsequent affirmation of courtly love by the German poets

"This anthology of thirty troubadour poets of the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries constitutes the fullest presentation of Provencal poetry in English ... The body of poetry in this book represents a fusion of Latin, Arabic, and Christian cultures which occurred only once ... Poem of the Cid : a modern translation with notes( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 464 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new translation of a medieval Spanish epic. In The second cantar, one reads: The Moors finish setting up their camp/and the dawn finally comes. Their drums set up a faster beat, booming quickly. Mio Cid, who was in high spirits, said: 'Ya what a beautiful day!' Few works have shaped a national literature as thoroughly as the Poem of the Cid has shaped the Spanish literary tradition. Tracing the life of the eleventh-century military commander Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, called the Cid (from the Arabic Sayyidi, My Lord), this medieval epic describes a series of events surrounding his exile. The text of the poem survives in only one early thirteenth-century manuscript copied by a single scribe, yet centuries later the figure of the Cid still was celebrated in the Spanish popular ballad tradition. Today almost every theme that characterizes Spanish literature-honor, justice, loyalty, treachery, and jealousy-derives from the Poem of the Cid. Restored by poet and medievalist George Economou, this elegant and spirited translation by Paul Blackburn is judged by many the finest English translation of a great medieval poem
William Langland's Piers Plowman : the C version : a verse translation by William Langland( Book )

9 editions published between 1996 and 2015 in English and held by 429 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"William Langland's Piers Plowman is one of the major poetic monuments of medieval England and of world literature. Probably composed between 1372 and 1389, the poem survives in three distinct versions. It is known to modern readers largely through the middle of the three, the so-called B-text. Now, George Economou's verse translation of the poet's third version makes available for the first time in modern English the final revision of a work that many have regarded as the greatest Christian poem in our language." "With its formal singularity, epic-scale vision, and enormous richness of content, this allegorical poem of the late fourteenth century has seized the imagination and interest of a growing and appreciative audience in the twentieth. Langland's remarkable powers of invention and his passionate involvement with the spiritual, social, and political crises of his time lay claim to our attention, and demand serious comparison with Dante's Divine Comedy. Economou's translation preserves the intensity of the poet's verse and the narrative energy of his alliterative long line, the immediacy of the original's story of the quest for salvation, and the individuality of its language and wordplay.
