An Enemy of the People addresses the irrational tendencies of the masses, and the hypocritical and corrupt nature of the political system that they support. It is the story of one man's brave struggle to do the right thing and speak the truth in the face of extreme social intolerance. Dr. Stockman is pilloried by townsmen who are unable to accept his discovery that the town's water supply is toxic. He attempts to expose a water pollution scandal in his home town which is about to establish itself as a spa. When his brother, the mayor, conspires with local politicians and the newspaper to suppress the story, Stockmann appeals to the public meeting only to be shouted down and reviled as an enemy of the people. Ibsen's explosive play reveals his distrust of politicians and the blindly held prejudices of the solid majority

The pillars of society by Henrik Ibsen( )

5 editions published between 2000 and 2010 in English and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Pillars of Society (original Norwegian title: Samfundets stoslash;tter) is an 1877 play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen had great trouble with the writing of this play which came before the series of masterpieces which made him famous throughout the world. The ending is the most criticised feature, since Bernick is clearly guilty of attempted murder but gets off unscathed, but successfully illustrates that the rich and powerful are often selfish and corrupt. - Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
