L'edizione, curata dal maggior esegeta ungarettiano, Carlo Ossola, pur mantenendo l'impostazione e i contenuti del volume predisposto dall'autore stesso nel 1969, lo arricchisce di una nuova sezione di "poesie ritrovate" e di alcuni testi inediti, e lo correda di una preziosa appendice di testi preparatori. L'apparato variantistico, grazie al ritrovamento di nuovi testimoni a stampa, è stato corretto e aggiornato in diversi punti, nonché fatto precedere da una sezione di indici delle raccolte. Oltre che di tutti i materiali contenuti nel "Meridiano" "storico", il lettore potrà inoltre disporre di un apparato di commento, costituito da una introduzione a ciascuna raccolta e di un commento a ciascuna poesia, che oltre a dare conto anche delle varianti manoscritte utili alla comprensione del contenuto e dell'elaborazione delle liriche, dà voce soprattutto all'autore, attingendo estesamente ai suoi autocommenti, editi (epistolari, interviste, prose, saggi) e inediti: per questa sezione i curatori si sono avvalsi di una sistematica esplorazione dell'archivio di Ungaretti e di quelli dei suoi corrispondenti, finora ignorati dalla critica

La alegría es un libro escrito en su mayor parte durante los años de la primera gran guerra (1914-1918). Versos compuestos entre el fango y las balas, donde los ojos de la muerte están siempre próximos y donde los combatientes buscan beber en numerosos instantes una gota de luz para saber que viven. El lector hallará que son fondo y trasfondo de La alegría, además del desierto y del mar egipcios, las montañas italianas, los variados grises parisienses y la neblina y las calles de Milán. En "La alegría" Ungaretti escribe poemas con versos cortos o cortados y sin puntuación, y, a la manera de Mallarmé y Apollinaire, utiliza esmeradamente los espacios de la página para hacer hablar a los silencios y al blanco. Es decir, la música no nace sólo de las palabras sino también de la hábil y ágil estructura del poema
